      Re: noise

      Hello Kontikiman and welcome to the Forum.

      I only start seeing noise on my 1DMKIV at ISO3200 and only a hint of it at ISO1600, so something must be seriously wrong with your settings. The MKIV is a thoroughbred, but it needs setting up properly for you and the handbook doesn't give the best description of each function, so it is very easy to end up with settings fighting against each other, or you think you are doing right and it just messes things up.

      Disable or turn off the following as they increase noise, or don't help:

      * Long exposure noise reduction

      * High ISO speed noise reduction

      * Highlight tone priority

      * Auto lighting optimiser

      Whilst they all seem good things to enable from their descriptions, they are not. Secondly, here are my settings that I last published. They are good for wildlife, motorsport and most other stuff. These are the one's I have changed from the standard out of the box settings, rather than list every custom function:

      CFn 1 Exposure
      2 1:1 stop Part ISO settings can increase noise up to 1600 ISO
      3 * Enable Max ISO 3200 min ISO 100
      13 * Enable Max F45 min f1.2
      15 1 1/300 sec fixed. (I do flit between these, so this CF is registered in my star functions)

      C Fn II
      3 Disable
      4 Disable
      6 I flit between 1st and 2nd curtain synch (added to my star functions)

      C Fn III
      2 * Either medium slow, or slow. I find slow better where the background is confusing.
      4 1 Continuous AF
      5 1 Focus search off
      7 2 Adjust be lens
      8 2 Surrounding AF Points
      9 1 AF Point selection
      10 1 19 points
      11 2 Only while * is pressed ( I use this for back button focus, you may not want it)
      13 2 On when focus achieved
      14 1 Brighter
      15 2 IR AF assist beam
      18 * Enable HS 10 shots LS 5 shots
      19 * 25 shots (Just in case it goes off accidentally.

      CFn IV

      1 3 Again, I use this for Back Button Focus - Default would be 0
      14 1 Enable

      Hope those help, but finally, you need to nail the exposure. Under exposure and bringing it back to normal through your RAW converter is an invitation to noise, so get the exposure right every time and you won't go far wrong.

        Re: noise

        I guess Kontikiman wasn't joking then going by Colin C settings.
        Brian you could have been more helpful rather than such a negative answer.

          I have a 1D iv & a 7D. At ISO800 the 1D iv has less noise than the 7D does at ISO200. Looking at Colin's settings & comments, I agree 100% with them.

            +1 - Comparing the 5DII and the 1D4 there is nothing in it until about iso 1600 when the 1D4 seems to be better than the 5DII. By iso 6400 the 1D4 is much better.

            Both cameras at iso400 are still noise free unless pp is used where there are dark shadows - even then it is not really significant

                Hope it works for you. Normally when you think of the 1D MKIV, noise isn't a word that comes to mind.

                        Hi Colin,

                        I hope you get the 1DX settings sorted out for us all next year.
