I decided to buy a second gun to go with my 7D and 580EXii and thought I would give the Yongnuo 568EX a go. Originally I was going to go for the 565 but figured the HSS was more useful for me than the battery pack connector. So having purchased said beast I thought I'd share my thoughts......
Mechanically the 568 feels pretty good - I dont like the screw clamp as much as Canons slide switch but no big deal. I think the critical difference here is that there is no button to press in order to tilt/swivel the head which means that if your the type of strobist to hang heavy modifiers on there you may suffer droop! Having said that my Rogue Flash bender works no problem.
Functionally everything is there except Master mode. In addition the 568 has a nice ready beep and the ability to be triggered by any flash it sees, either by the first flash or the second which means it wouldnt be triggered by any other TTL pre flash in your setup.
I did a power output comparison test, and found the 568 lagging behind the 580 by around 2/3 of a stop. So it does not quite share the GN of 58. I also found that the light spread becomes a notably less uniform above the 50mm zoom level compared to the 580. It has a distinct hot horizontal bar across the centre. Below 50mm all is good.
All said for 1/3 of the price not a bad piece of kit providing reliability holds out.
