I am considering buying a smaller flash gun for my G15 rather than the large 580Ex. What are the members views on the two flash guns in terms of power, compatibility, & cosmetic appearances?

Re: G15 & Canon 90EX vs Canon 270ex ii
I'm happy with the 270 I got when I bought the G12. A guide no. of 27 has so far been adequate for what I've needed, it has a basic tilt and zoom head (no swivel), and looks "right" on the G12. It's not too heavy, and is small enough to slip in a jacket pocket or my wifes handbag. I've even used it on the 30D once or twice when I needed a bit more than the internal flash. I've only got the mark 1 version, the mark 2 has a slave function as well.
I dismissed the 90 when it came out as being far too "weedy" to be of use, with a guide no. of only 9. It also only has a fixed head and to me isn't significantly lighter than the 270. I didn't realise, however, that it has a master function which would control my 580 and 550 off camera. Someone on another forum has bought both, as he finds the 90 adequate in small rooms, and he uses it to control his 580 off camera with both his G15 and 5D3. I'm not sure I'd ever use off camera flash with the G12, but it is worth considering for my 30, although saying that it's now only a back up for my 70D.John

Re: G15 & Canon 90EX vs Canon 270ex ii
Thanks JK. I will go in for the 270 as I also only need it for the G15 in confined spaces, if necessary.Canon 6D; Canon 760D;Canon G15;Canon 40mm f2.8(Pancake);Canon 50mm f1.8(ii); Canon 17mm-40mm f4L;Canon EF-S 10-18mm f4.5-5.6 IS STM;Canon EF-S 55-250mm f4-5.6 STM lens;Canon 24mm-105mmf4L IS;Canon 70-300mm f4-f5.6 L IS USM;Kenko 1.4x HD TC;Canon 430EX ii flash;Giottos tripod;Manfretto monopod;Cokin P filters + bits and pieces!

I think they both can be used as slave flashes. I bought the earlier version of the 270 when I bought my 5D Mk II (as, of course there is no "pop-up" flash. You also could consider some thing like a Metz 36 AF - more power, hardly any bigger than the 270, but no "slave" - round about £65.00. (Mecablitz) Metz have been making flash guns for donkeys years so can be trusted. - Just my two penn'orth.

Thanks Colly. Yes, I know the Metz flash guns from my film camera days- very reliable and very good. Most probably I will go in for the Canon 270ii to keep it within the Canon family and I also have the 580EX.Canon 6D; Canon 760D;Canon G15;Canon 40mm f2.8(Pancake);Canon 50mm f1.8(ii); Canon 17mm-40mm f4L;Canon EF-S 10-18mm f4.5-5.6 IS STM;Canon EF-S 55-250mm f4-5.6 STM lens;Canon 24mm-105mmf4L IS;Canon 70-300mm f4-f5.6 L IS USM;Kenko 1.4x HD TC;Canon 430EX ii flash;Giottos tripod;Manfretto monopod;Cokin P filters + bits and pieces!
