    1.4 or 2X III?

    Hi

Which extender would you use with a 5D Mark III & 300mm f2.8 II Lens?

Always go for the 1.4x, unless you have a very specific need for the 2x.

With the 1.4x on a 300mm f2.8, you would be hard pushed to tell the difference in quality and it is still effectively an aperture of f4, so still very quick to focus and track. You would probably use the 2x a lot less, you can start to tell the difference in quality, though most others wouldn't recognise the difference. At an effective aperture of f5.6 with the 300mm, the viewfinder is darker, slower to focus and tracking isn't so consistent.

If funds allow you to buy both, fine. If not, the 1.4x is the one to go for.

      Hi Vikki

What kind of subject are you going to be shooting.

Agree with the wise words on the 1.4x. With the 2x you can get good IQ if the light is good but the main issue for your interest in wildlife is that the 2x does reduce autofocus speed noticeably. The 2xIII may be better with the 300 II lens, I guess.

Not so sure about the reduced af speed. Not with the 1d mkIV anyway, I use the 2x mk111 primarily for motorsports couple of sample shots with it attached to the 70-200 2.8 mk2 - bare in mind these guys are well in excess of 100mph
Okay these aren't wildlife BUT no where near as easy as people think.

Bad light, chucking it down with rain. . . no problem

and even at 400mm it's still nice n sharp as well as holding the focus on his face

A real shame you can't pop along to Brands Hatch this weekend for the Lotus Festival, you could have tried mine out.

Re the 2x, I was basing my comments on the MkII with a 300 2.8 Mk1. A shiny new 2x MkIII arrived today so will see if things improve.
David's comment suggest that it should be better.

Here you go Vicky - took the whole day of wildlife (okay zoo) with the 70-200 and the 2x mk3 extender: HERE

The sun was relentless and a lot were taken in the open at or around midday so a few are a little blown out BUT you get to see how well it works.
