    Lenses one to many 7D

    I have Sig 10-20, Canon 50 1.8 mk1, 85, 24-105, 70-200 f4 IS with 1x4 extenders. My thinking, sell the 85 and 24-105, buy the 24-70 mk1, advice please !!
    Thanks

I'd keep what you already have.
You'll miss the IS of the 24-105mm and that is a cracking lens. The 24-70mm may be faster but does not have IS.
The 24-70mm (also known as the "brick") weight an additional 210g to the 24-105mm.

Do you need a faster lens?

You have a nice range, with a lot of overlap. Not sure why you would want to jettison the 85mm as it makes a great portrait lens, however if you are set for the 24-70, then I would think about jettisoning the 24-105 & 70-200 and picking up a 70-300 L along with the 24-70, but I'd keep the 85mm.

But Like Stephen, I'd have to ask the same question as to your main interest.

IS I use very seldom. I generally always use a shutter speed higher than the focal length of the lens, so IS is of no benefit.

F2.8 is one whole stop brighter in the viewfinder and that generates into faster and more accurate focusing than with an f4 lens and that extra performance I can use all the time.

I swapped my 24-105mm f4 for a 24-70mm f2,8 MK I, at the time I got the benefit for the studio work I was doing in college. as far as the IS, I don't miss at all, but I do like having the extra stop I gained. When I need the extra length, I swap over to my 70-200mm. Just my tuppence worth.

I have owned a 24-105, loved it, sharp and precise. The IS on the 24-105 is a really good implementation. However, for me There isn't really an alternative. In a dark lit situation with the 24-105 at say f4.0 1/30s at ISO 2500, with the "brick" 24-70 you have the freedom to go for example f2.8 1/60 at ISO 2500 for more stable shot OR f2.8 1/30 at ISO 1250 for less noice. Of course all this depends on the situation and motive. The 24-105 is a modern solid piece of glass. But the 24-70 I felt was more trusty in tight situations. Also, autofocus wise, the cameras cross type sensors must allow 2.8 to really be able to use the faster lense. For a full frame camera I would go for 2.8, with a crop sensor I would go for the 24-105! On 4.0 on both lenses of course the 24-70 is sharper.

My 5 cents, good luck :)

              Hi
Thank you all, photographic interests are portraits and landscapes I never shoot sports. I've found the 24-105 struggling for light but nifty can handle but I don't want to keep changing/carrying lenses ! Hence looking at 24-70 or maybe the 28-70 ? If you can find one ! Advice please.
I'm in Nova Scotia Canada at present BUT unless you have big bucks DON'T expect to see it all, plus beer is around £6 a pint be warned !!

                Hi Stephen
Lenses are for general photography-no sports-and I need/want to get rid of some weight. I've gone off the 24-70 price/weight and thinking as follows, buy a 17-55 2.8IS, sell the Canon 24-105, 85 1.8, Sigma 10-20 4-5.6. and keep the Nifty 1.8 and 70-200 f4 IS. & extenders. I'll have got rid of overlaps/weight with a 11mm loss on the short end and a small gap in the middle.
                Opinion please ?
                Thanks
