    24-105 and 17-40 Tips?

Have a couple of new additions to my kit, the 24-105L and a 17-40L. Will be using these on my 60D.

Any super tips for getting the best out of these? optimum aperture, with filter or without? anything really.

Well you need a Protect Filter on the 17-40L to fully weatherproof. Not sure about 24-105L put mine wears a Protect as well.

Nothing really to watch out for ... although at the 17mm end the 17-40L can cause distortions ... noticeable on geometric objects (buildings in the main). But nothing that can't be corrected in PP.

Just enjoy them .... as for optimum aperture ... technically I think tests find f/8 'best' ... but I often shoot f/4 with either of them and can't say I notice IQ degration ... they are L lens after all

The main tip.............................do not drop them! 17/40 do not use below f8 and above f16. 24-105 best around f8 to f11. Also do not buy cheap filters. Other than that..................Enjoy, they are both very, very good for the money.

I have both these lenses and find them to be great, as Treff has said they are at their best between f8 and f11 I do find with the 17-40 that if you push the f# much above f16 the IQ does suffer. If you use Lightroom or PS it is worth using their lens correction which I find helps improve things a little in some cases.

I find the 24-105 is okay from f5.6 until diffraction becomes an issue (which depends on the camera). (Not that f4 is bad, just the sharpness really kicks in from f5.6.)

Don't own a 17-40 but f8 sounds like a plan based on tests I've seen.

              Re: 24-105 and 17-40 Tips?

The 17-40mm is superb between f/5.6 & f/8.0 (peak resolution) and still very good at f/11.
At f/4.0 the borders are a little softer then when stopped down to f/5.6 and beyond.

The 24-105mm is good at all apertures except between 70-105mm at f/4.0.
From 70mm to 105mm the lens needs to be stopped down (1-stop).

You will be very happy with both lenses.

I have both these lenses too, I find myself using the 17-40 more and more as a 'walk-about' lens on my 60D.

Thanks for all the tips. Must say I prefer the 17-40 at the moment. Maybe need a little more time to get used to the 24-105. Me and my daughter off to London tomorrow to do nothing but take photographs, people watch I the odd cafe etc. So will give them both a good test.

If you use a screw in polariser, unscrew the UV or protect filter first to prevent corner vignetting. Also, the standard lenshood is not a great deal of use on a cropped body. The EW-83DII is the one to go for.

Thanks Colin, the 24-105 has a EW-83H which looks very similar to the EW-83DII, will it make much of a difference? also can the EW-83H be used on the 17-40, the one that is with it the EW-83E is huge and a pain to get in my bag.

Maybe a bit late for Swoosh's day out but this may help in future. I did some tests on these lenses using Focal's aperture sharpness function. These results obviously apply to my specific lenses but may be indicative of the lens design in general.

                          Peter,

The more you use the 24-105mm lens the more you will fall in love with it. It is a brilliant lens. I don't have a 17-40mm lens but have a 17-35mm f2.8L lens, which is near enough. I love this as well. Since I have two camera bodies I have these lenses on each of the bodies.

                            Suspect you are right Nat.

London trip didn't happen, hoping to get a few hours around our local town later. Need to as daughter needs to take photos for her school project.

Thanks for that info Alistair, I will have a proper read of it later.

So looking like for the 17-40, f/7.1 - f/8 and for the 24-105 f/4.5-f/5 is looking the best, obviously times when different settings would be used, but a good indication of starting point, and go to setting if in doubt. Thanks.
