It allows you to get much closer to the subject whilst maintaining auto-focus.
Although the area of auto-focus is limited/restricted.Canon EOS R6 Mark II, Canon RF 100-500mm f4.5-7.1L, Canon RF 24-105mm f4L

It will also allow you to join two early Canon extenders together to give extra reach with a 2.8 lens. I used this combination successfully on an EF 300mm f/2.8 (1.4 + 2x).
