Has anyone got experience of this lens? How does it compare to the Canon 17-40? Initially to use on a 7D but shortly going FF so have to replace my Sigma 10-20.

Re: Tokina 17-35
I do not have the Tokina lens but I have the Canon 17-35mm f2.8L (not in production now). I suggest you go with Stephen's suggestion with the Canon 16mm- 35mm lens f2.8 lens.Canon 6D; Canon 760D;Canon G15;Canon 40mm f2.8(Pancake);Canon 50mm f1.8(ii); Canon 17mm-40mm f4L;Canon EF-S 10-18mm f4.5-5.6 IS STM;Canon EF-S 55-250mm f4-5.6 STM lens;Canon 24mm-105mmf4L IS;Canon 70-300mm f4-f5.6 L IS USM;Kenko 1.4x HD TC;Canon 430EX ii flash;Giottos tripod;Manfretto monopod;Cokin P filters + bits and pieces!

Re: Tokina 17-35
I'm getting concerned there'll be no reasonably priced 5DII's left for me at this rate, everyone seems to be going FF!
I've been looking at the same sort of thing and whilst the 16-35L seems great it is considerably more expensive than the 17-40L. So I'd temper Nathaniel's suggestion with how much do you need the extra stop and how deep are your pockets?TS-E17 F4L, 70-300L, 100 F2.8L Macro. http://www.flickr.com/photos/waynelsworth/

I am quite sure there will be many 5D MK2's coming on the market with the 6D coming on stream. Agree with Wayne re the extra stop and deep pockets. I would certainly say that the 17-40 f4L is a very good alternative, and cheaper than the 16-35mm f2.8L lens

Re: Tokina 17-35
Well I certainly can't afford the Canon 16-35 f2.8 but can get the Tokina 17-35 f4 for about £100 cheaper than the Canon 17-40 f4. I have read a couple of reviews of the Tokina and it scores very highly. One review I read of the Canon 17-40 suggests that it could be time for a Mkll version as some of the latest model FF cameras with their higher resolution performances may require it. If I go for a 5D Mk lll do you think that this might indeed be the case?

Tokina 17-35
When researching potential purchases like this I'm often frustrated by the professional (and amateur) review ratings which seem to focus on value for money and not optical quality. What I'd prefer is an honest appraisal of optical quality, and then I can decide whether the extra-stop or five-star optics are worth the premium over the lessor product rather than bundling everything up in an interrelated mess.
I personally have little doubt that the Tok's optical performance is inferior to that of the Canon glass, but VFM wise that's for you to decide!Steve's kit - Canon 6D/EG-D/BG-E13/60D/EF-D/BG-E9/600 EX-RT/17-40L/24-105L/40/100L/70-200L/70-300/2x iii/Sigma 8-16/Yongnuo YN-568EX (x2)/YN560EX II/YN622C-TX/YN622C (x4)

If the Canon 16-35mm is too expensive then get the Canon 17-40L but only if you really need an UWA lens as the Canon 24-105mm on the 5D series is quite wide.Canon EOS R6 Mark II, Canon RF 100-500mm f4.5-7.1L, Canon RF 24-105mm f4L
