    canon 24-105mm L or 70-200mm f2.8 L

    Hi everyone
I have had no experience with the canon 24-105 L lens and would like your views on the sharpness produced between the Canon 24-105mm L and the Canon 70-200mm f2.8 L non IS which one do you say gives the sharper images.

I do not have any experience with the 70-200mm but I own a 24-105mm lens and I am very happy with it. The images are very sharp and bright.

      Manson,

In my experience, the 70-200 f/2.8 is the sharper but that's not to say that the other is not, it is. It's a funny choice as they cover different ranges, go for both

Both are very good lens - you just have to choose the right length for your requirement

OK thanks so lets say I wanted a lens for portraits and it has to be one of the two mentioned.

Depends on the size of your room...

If you can get further away then more of the range of the 70-200 is useable. Realistically you're not going to be using anything below 50mm for portraits whereas you can use 200mm.

Wooley so you would go with the 70-200mm.

It depends what camera you are shooting on, if a 1.6 crop camera, then 70-200mm will probably be too long for portraits. While the 24-105 F4L is rated by many, I don't think it's a good portrait lens, mainly because the widest aperture is F4, often taking portraits you are shooting at f2.8 (to blur the background).

If using a crop camera, then the 50mm F1.8 would be a better bet for portraits, or if full frame then 85mm F1.8.

Also, the 70-200mm F2.8, whilst a sharp, clean lens, it would be difficult to hand hold (and avoiding camera shake) for a long portrait session.
