450D Kit lens - worth getting repaired?

Hi

I've just returned from a weekend away where I took a tumble down a flight of stairs holding my camera. The body is OK apart from a few scratches (same as my own actually!), but the kit lens (18-55 IS) took a thump and now the autofocus doesn't work. You can hear the motor whirring but nothing happens - i'm presuming a gear has been knocked out of kilter.

Is it worth getting it repaired or should I just get a new one?

How much would canon charge for such a repair as if it's close to the cost of a new one then as money is tight at the moment would it be better to buy a new one.

Hi Iain,
Firstly, sorry to hear of your accident.
On the face of it, I don’t think this would be a cost effective repair, or even a claim on your travel or home insurance. I Hope I’m wrong.

Were you toying with the idea of getting a new lens?

I was, just can't afford it at the moment. Just wanted to know if there was any point in repairing it.

I've seen some going for about £50 on ebay, so might go for one of those.

Did you get a price off Canon.?
I know their services centres are pretty non-committal on prices over the phone. I suppose you can't blame really them.

Maybe something like this could tide you over. £35 (not the IS version).
