EF 24-105 IS USM - Tripod Sensing?

I was always under the impression that you're meant to turn off IS, if the lens is to be used on a tripod. Is that actually the case with the EF 24-105 IS USM? I'm questioning it, as I've read somewhere that this lens is tripod sensing and as such IS can be left on?

Is it tripod sensing, are there other lenses that are?

Not that I'm aware ... I always turn IS off when not required anyway.

It is tripod sensing, so technically you can leave it on.

I still turn it off. In fact, I always leave IS off and only turn it on the rare times I do need it.

I stand corrected about tripod sensing .... [Canon's Chuck Westfall states "nearly all Canon Image Stabilizer lenses except the now-discontinued original 1995 EF75-300mm IS model have some degree of tripod-sensing. In most cases, what that means is that when the lens senses that it's completely steady, it effectively prevents the IS mechanism from moving."

However he still recommends switching IS off when on a tripod, to save battery power and to physically lock the IS lens elements in place.]

Well I admit I didn't know that ... that is if the lens is completely still it 'disables' the IS mechanism.

Thanks MX5 (what's your real name?), that's what I'd read, just couldn't recall where.
