16-35 or 18-85

I am off to Galapogas next year and know that I need a wide lens. I am using a crop sensor camera, maybe a 7D and I am thinking of getting the 15-85. Anyone had any experience with this lens. I must admit, I have never really been happy with the results of my 16-35 V1. Never seems to be sharp, always a little soft. Any one had a similar with this lens also

I had a 16 - 35mm f2.8 and I was never very happy with it. I chopped it in for the later 17 - 40mm f4, which was considerably sharper.

The 16 - 35mm f2.8 MKII came out some time afterwards and it is a much sharper lens, but as I don't do a great deal of wide angle work, I decided to stick with the 17 - 40mm.
