    I am using the 17-85 as mine walk around lens, and I take very Nice pictures with it. I Find it A great aprovement above the kitlens.

      I also have a 17-85 IS that came with my 40D. I don't find it quite the horror that some reports on the internet suggest it to be but it does tend to distort a bit at the extreme ends and fringing/chromatic abberrations are quite strong. While I wouldn't describe it as soft it's not as sharp as the Sigma 17-70 that I normally use. Against my 50mm f1.8 and 60mm macro it does tend to look a lot softer.

      It would be helpful to see an image or two to determine whether it's mis-focusing or has other issues...
