    Canon EF 28-105mm F3.5-4.5 USM

I've been looking at one of these to use as a walk about/portrait lens. They are selling on ebay for just over 100 pounds.

Been usm I'm thinking its a little bit of a step up over my 18-55 kit lens.

Anyone ever had one? Were they ever any good?

      Yeah Ive had one.
And your thinking is sound for a step up from the kit lens, I used the 28-105 as a stepping stone to the 24-105.
But there are a few marks so choose carefully.

Also depending on your budget you could go that wee bit extra and get the 28-135 IS

The mark 1 Canon EF 28-105mm F3.5-4.5 USM is the lens version to buy and quite a sharp lens at that I would buy another but I am hooked on the L series lenses now.

Ah.. Thanks for that. Will look at Mark I's and also have a look at 28-135 to see if the pennies make sense.

Canon EF 28-105mm F3.5-4.5 USM is not a great lens optically.
The reasonably new Canon EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 STM IS is a far better option and better focal range on a crop camera.
New it cost just under £300 but better than any unknown second-hand lens.

Have a look at this review BTW make sure it is made in japan that would be on the front ring and also make sure that in the distance window there is a little yellow flower and not the words Macro. Mine was very sharp. but there are a few copies around that are not so good that is why I have given you details to look out for. maybe Hereford had one of these copies.

Right. I have on the way one Canon EF 28-105mm F3.5-4.5 USM - Mark I - Made in Japan, with little gold flower. Thanks for that Mandon, I got lost in mark ones, two's and threes. Complete with 12month warranty. I'll post photos when its here.

Thank you everyone for your replies. Very helpful. I'll carry on saving the pennies to make further purchases.

In the meantime... I'll just wait by the letter box and surprise the postman.

Do not open the door in your nighty as the postman will say "That's a strange place to have a door" (in your nighty)

                    Postman arrive this morning.

As promised. All I've done with this is a tiny crop, slight adjustment on contrast and a border - convert to jpeg as I shoot in raw. They've been sat on the windowsill since Mothersday. Lens arrived this morning with enough bubble wrap to put on a fair impression of Riverdance.

                    Exposure Bias 0 EV
                    Flash On, Fired
The yellow line running diagonal is the washing line outside the window and down the garden. I was going to clone and get rid of it, but wanted to leave the picture as-is as much as possible.
