Hey folks,
Some people will know that I bought a Canon EF-S 17-85mm lens for £50. A bargain you might say? Hmm not really, I knew it was broken, hence the price. I contacted a company in Glasgow, with the recommendation from someone on here, and they said it would cost £96+VAT to fit a new IRIS.
I thought hmmm, I wonder.... A quick search around ebay and I got a new aperture cable for £2, and thought, awesome I could so fix this myself.
Day three: Got the cable, and rushed home to dismantle and fit new cable and Bobs your uncle.
NOPE!!
Soldering job was a disaster, and I couldn't get it back together. So humbly I run off to said place in Glasgow today and get hit with a bill of £140+VAT because I took it apart and they can't give me it back for 4 weeks.
Pretty annoyed with myself, but a lesson learned.
1. Never buy second hand lenses
2. If you are. Make sure it's a lens you really want.
3. Never try to repair it yourself.
Granted when I was able to use it, I found the focal range absolutely fantastic, so i'm glad It'll be fixed, just not happy with the timescale.
When I was sitting in the waiting room of the place there was an EOS Magazine mag in the waiting area. I really liked the format of it and read it for about 10 mins before they came back out.
I'm happy with the recommendation of course, as they know what they are going.
Repair, clean, new IRIS and re-calibrate.
Paul
