    Canon 2X (mk 2 or 3) Teleconverter.

Firstly I hope I have put this in the right section of the forum (apart from the intro it's my first posting)

If not I guess hopefully somebody can put it in the right place.

My question is ... will the canon 2x tc mk3 (or mark2) work in ai servo mode on a 7d paired up with the 70-200 f2.8 L is usm lens ... Has anyone used or uses this combination ?

    Many thanks in anticipation ..

I sometimes use my 2x II with my 70-200 f2.8 LIS on a 7D and it is quite acceptable in good light although the focus slows down a bit. The 1.4x is a much better bet and that is my preference using it with my 300f4 when i need 400 mm

Dont know if the mk III would be any better, on a 70-200 I suspect not

I often use a 1.4x and it is difficult to know that it was used. The 2x I tend to use as emergency only. The MkIII versions are marginally better, but not significantly so.

How does the TC 2X work with the Canon 70-200mm f4L? does it work/focus better than with the 300mm f4 L IS lens?

The Canon 2x Mk3 works with 70 - 200 f2.8L IS 11 lens. The image quality seems as good as produced by the 1.4x Mk 11 that I also use. But the focusing is a little slower'

          Hope this helps.

It doesn't Nat - as you know, a 2x converter loses 2 stops of light so that your 70-200 f4 with become an f8, so unless you have a 1 series body it will not autofocus

Okey dokey thanks for the advice. If the fucusing is a bit slower I guess it might still be useable,(or will it ?) when I try some birds in flight shots then. ?.What do you lot reckon.Cant go to the expense of a bigger lens, well not at the moment anyway,so says she who must be obeyed.!!

The 5DmkIII will also AF at f8, although I can't say I'd care as you're using a lot less light than you started with.

BTW I'd rate the 2x mk III a bit further ahead the of mk II than Colin does. I think the 1.4x III is only a small improvement on the mk II.

Oh, and on the original question - yes, but not sure of the AF speed as don't have a 7D. Plus I'd really get (i) the mk III extender and (ii) the mk II 70-200 f2.8 as you probably need to use it wide-open.

BTW I tend to only use my 2x extender on my 300 f2.8 where the AF speed is really pretty good, so I can't say much about how fast it is on other lenses, but do note Colin says it slows some of his lenses down a lot and certainly wouldn't argue with that as he always seems an excellent source of info. I will give it a go on the 70-200 when I get a sec, but curry first :-)
