I haven't stopped mentioning buying this monolithic lens. Not because I knew its size, but how its perceived in the real world. I had high expectations for it.
I own a Canon 7D as most of you know, because I too have hardly shut up about that. I felt the pairing would be a great match based on what the majority of people write.
"L glass is the best thing you can do for a 7D"
"The 7D demands pro glass to get the best out of it"
70-200 2.8L is ii usm on a canon 7d by Campsie Photography, on Flickr
As you can see, its pretty MASSIVE on the 7D. It almost dwarfs it. Having spent about 10 mins shooting with it at work, I spent less time snapping and more time explaining that I cannot see up their nostrils despite it's size.
I've only taken a couple of shots of work colleagues in and around the school so nothing really to base anything solid on, but I'm largely impressed with the IQ. Focus speed is unlike anything I've witnessed and I fear now that anything else is just going to be substandard.
The weight (1.5kg) is going to be an issue. It's pretty heavy, and I reckon as soon as you have a slight hint of fatigue, you're going to feel it with this slung over your shoulder, or even holding it in your hand.
I'm hoping to get out with it this afternoon on my usual lunchtime walk.
One thing that dawned on me, was an overwhelming sense of "This is too pro for me" However, I'm sure that will fall away over time.
My over all niggling feeling is that while the 7D is an absolute beast, I can't help but feel that this focal range and what this lens is ideally for, would be suited on a FF body. 70mm (112mm on crop) at the short end is tight, and 200mm (320mm on crop) isn't quite far enough. However on FF your FOV would be expanded a lot more.
Maybe too early to tell whether I'm going to keep it or not, but I'm sure going to give it a run for its money.
I'll keep you updated, for those like me, who found that info on real world use was a little lacking on the net.
