micro motor usm v stm

As the cheaper lens use a micro usm as opposed to the ring type is the stm technology faster at af than the micro motor usm and a further question how good is stm at following a moving subject for a still photo,

any experiences?



I know stm is better for video use so these questions are related for stills.

STM Faster? - certainly. Quieter - the STM is inaudible so much quieter than micromotor USM. In my limited experience of STM, it's as good as ring USM. The full time manual focus is a useful bonus also, just a bit disconnected to use as it's not mechanically linked.

Haven't seriously tried following a moving subject so can't comment on that at the moment.
