    Just a thought. That lens has full time manual focus. You aren't nudging the manual focus ring, causing it to drop into manual focus are you? That might explain why none of the AF points show as being active in DPP.

      The zoom ring is about 4 inches away from the focus ring and I hold the lens with the collar attached and zoom with my thumb. No way I'm even close to the focus ring.

      I think I've sorted it all anyway. The lens was back focussing buy 2 increments on the MFA meter. I just dialled in a -2 on the adjustment by lens on the camera and it's been totally fine since. Also shooting at f/4 drastically improves the sharpness to the point that I struggle to find a flaw. Not that I go looking for flaws, but it's exceptional :)
