    Loosening Lenses

I had an interesting (in the bad sense!) experience this weekend, whereby I managed to loosen a lens not once, but three times Surprisingly everything still worked, albeit at maximum aperture, without auto-focus and with some corner vignetting due to the lens' internal baffles. The EXIF data is also missing the lens characteristics due to the electrical connection being lost, but fortunately the lens never actually parted company with the body, that would have been bad

I presume I'm catching the lens-lock button whilst zooming. There doesn't appear to be anything wrong with the locking mechanism on the body, and it's only happening with a tele-zoom so I think it must be operator error

I usually keep the tripod-ring on the lens but removed it on Saturday, which I guess may be the reason I'd not suffered with the problem previously.

Has anyone else ever inadvertently operated the lens-lock and loosened a lens?

Not an issue I've had either, quite the opposite in fact when changing lenses in a hurry.

I've never ever experienced this, good job the lens didn't part company with the body. Out of interest what lens was it?

I have had that experience with a 70 - 200 on a 40D. Like you, I put it down to operator error (hamfistedness!), and I had the tripod ring on. It happened several times but either the lens failed to respond at all or, on some occasions, actually detached from the camera. Fortunately, never in a situation where I was unable to catch it or at least stop it hitting the floor. Needless to say, I'm a lot more cereful now!

I've found myself hitting the lock button when carrying my camera, but luckily I've never actually loosened the lens.

Like you Martin it was a 70-200 f/2.8 IS, so not inexpensive.

The tripod collar is now attached again, so fingers crossed it was just "one of those things" as it doesn't seem to be prevalent amongst Canonista :)
