but least with these long L lenses and bodies you get a workout at the same time ;o) -

I'm thinking about buying a monopod at the same time with this lens

Good move. I love using mine with the 70-200, and the balance is perfect with a monopod.
I can recommend the Manfrotto 680B. Quite light and very sturdy.

cheers I've got a Manfrotto tripod so that was the make I looking at for monopod so I'll check that model out - do you mount straight onto it ? or use a head ?

              Re: Pics of the 100-400mm

I mainly use it with the 70-200 & 300 and screw the monopod screw head straight into the tripod collar. The balance is then perfect. I find if I screw the monopod into the camera body it's very front heavy with those lenses.
I wouldn't bother with a head for it when using the longer lenses. The collar will allow you to move from landscape to portrait with a simple twist.
You can get a simple head when you attach it to the body, but I personally find that I hardly ever use my camera in portrait mode when on a monopod and prefer the rigidity and security of screwing it directly into the tripod mount.

The local camera shop is taking pre orders for delivery in December at .........£1999

If I were in the market I think I may be tempted by the new Sigma 150-600 sport @ £1599

nice to see the local shops fighting back against the online traders by getting stocks fast ... very surprised the online retailers aren't especially the big grey importers

There's some sample images on this page

If the MFT charts are anything to be trusted, this new lens is sharper than the 70-200 2.8 MKII @ 200mm. That is incredible.

When you compare it to the 200-400 f4 it's cheap. I can understand why they opted for variable aperture because of the size of the front element needed would likely raise the cost again. I still think £1999 is a lot of money. It's heavier than the 70-200 2.8 MKII and quite right due to the glass needed.

I'd like to see if it would be useful in sports. That 5.6 at the long end won't be useful in dim lit stadiums (I had to use ISO8000 two weeks ago at F4) but in bright days it might be useful. It's essentially thee perfect wildlife lens.

its not cheap, but with its performance you wouldn't expect it to be, but from memory ( dangerous ) its cheaper than the Nikon version - as to weight, its only tad heavier

The Nikon equivalent at WEX is £100 cheaper and has a £175 cashback at the moment, and is an 80-400. Having said that, I don't think £100 is a big premium for a brand new design...
