    Sigma 125mm-400mm Canon fit

I note that the above lens weighs approx 1270grms and fits my criteria of the kind of long lens I am looking. I have not discounted the 400mm f5.6 nor the 100-400mm mk1 lens. Has any member used this sigma lens and if so any views on that esp IQ.

    Many thanks

    Nat

P.S this lens should read Sigma 135mm-400mm and not 125mm-400mm

That is/was a film lens nat total rubbish for digital ,it was superseded by the 120-400 mm o.s which is far superior ,the lenses in that 100-400 range whether they be canon, sigma or tamron all suffer from the fact that optimum focus is achieved at f8 .the 400mm f5.6 can be used wide open and still get sharp shots ,you need to do more homework nat

Jeff, thanks for that. I am still doing my home work, just like you did before you plumped for the 150-600mm lens.

        Re: Sigma 125mm-400mm Canon fit

My only experience of Sigma telephotos is the 50-500mm used on an Olympus E30, when I upgraded to an Olympus 300mm f2.8 I was astonished at the vastly improved IQ despite the loss of reach. My feelings are that a mediocre prime is preferable to a good zoom and the 400mm f5.6 is an excellent performer despite being introduced 22 years ago, same weight as the Sigma you mention as well.

          Re: Sigma 125mm-400mm Canon fit

A friend of mine had one in Minolta fit and he found it to be very soft at the long end, anything beyond about 300mm he reckoned as being useless...

Jeff Sharez on FLickr shoots with the Sigma 120-400. Gets some good results. He's just a wee guy too. Weight of the lens isn't an issue for him.
