Canon 100-400 Mk 2 Vs Sigma 150-600 Sport

I wonder if anybody has any thoughts based on experience or web reviews (state which) about which lens is the better optically. Forget the price, weight etc - how do they compare optically ?
    Cheers

surly the only way would be to but them back to back ?

I've been using the 100-400 and its a stunning lens, but its only 400 not 600 and seeing what Jeff & Stan are getting with it if you need the reach then the sigma would be the choice - if however your looking for a good lens that you could walk around all day carrying then the 100-400 is excellent, I'm pretty sure you couldn't do that with the sigma

I take your point Tigger - but I would be interested if anybody can compare them. Has anybody owned the Canon mk1 version and the Sigma at the same time ?

Can't answer that Jim ,I used to have the 400 prime and 1.4 tc that virtually equalled the focal length of this sigma and while it was a good sharp combo and probably equally as sharp at times as the sigma ,the crunch of it was it wasn't as consistent of as versatile i can't speak for the mkii plus t.c it should be good but you still have to have it set up ready which could lead to lost shots .
The other advantage of the sigma as well is with the right bodies it will also take a t.c and A/F giving even more reach .you pays yer money and takes yer chances

I can't complain with the 100-400 plus 1.4 - focus is fast and very sharp - heres one at 560 mm

Based on my recent experience of hiring a Sigma 150-600 S, carrying it about all day is a definite and emphatic, "NO!".

Unfortunately I have no experience of the 100-400 ... yet!

my gut feeling would be if your going to carry it around at all go for the 100-400, if not 150-600

Not really sure you can compare the two,

If you need the extra reach then you only have the sigma to choose from and if 400mm is enough for your needs then the canon is the one.looking at the sigma zoomed out to 600mm is almost 19"long so a tripod is probably a must.

It depends I suppose on your own physical limitations ,although I,m nearly 70 I am still reasonably fit and at 6,1" and 19 plus stone I feel quiet comfortable using the sigma hand held all day ,your not exactly aiming it at targets full time are you only as needed.
I have used the sigma in this manner for a while now ,I did try a tripod for a day and found it to cumbersome to carry a monopod on a ball head is a worthwhile alternative but adds more weight .
My acid test will be in Yorkshire in a few weeks while at bempton .i will let you all know how I get on
