    EF or EF-S

To add to the quandry threads, can anyone offer any insight as to going for EF or EF-S lenses. I have recently come to digital SLR with a 550D and though I shouldn't be able to justify going full frame, I'm tempted to think about it so EF would be good for the future.
My main use is landscape (mostly coastal and golf courses) so a decent zoom range is required.
I currently have a canon 18-200 which works well but 90% are in the 20-80mm range, so i was thinking of a 24-105 EF would be more suited and the other alternative in the EF-S is 15-85 giving cover for the wider small% and not being limited.
Or am I falling into the trap!??

If you think you might consider full frame in the future, I would say think about getting a decent EF-S compatible wide angle, 10-20 or thereabouts (see the wide angle thread), and then every other lens you get can be an EF one. That way if you ever go full frame you have decent lenses right away, and only need to get rid of the EF-S wide angle. On the other hand, as mentioned in the other thread, the Sigma 12-24 is compatible with both crop and full frame sensor cameras.

Think advice from John is quite good. Take a look a secondhand for a wide angle suitable for your crop sensor. MPB are good place to start.

Good advice already re wide angle on a crop sensor. Most of us here are big fans of the 24-105L as its a great walk about lens with good IQ and very well priced.

          Re: EF or EF-S

          Hi John,

If you're thinking of going full frame - don't buy an EF-S lens because it won't work with a FF camera.

The 18-200mm is a very good lens. It was my favourite walkabout lens until I went FF. As the others have said, the 24-105mm L lens is a great walkabout lens. Another good walkabout lens, although it's focal range is obviously higher, is the 70-300mm L lens. This is a very compact lens with excellent IQ.

          Cheers,
          Neil

Thanks for all the advice and input. In reality for all I do I have no need to step up to FF it's mainly the lure of L lenses I guess.
I do want to stick to a limited amount of gear (don't we all!), I find the 18-200 suited to all my needs but the Manual focus is a bit lacking.
As I mentioned in my OP and you have said I will probably go for the 24-105 F4 L, then again,,,
Might as well add another image from the golf course

When I had a crop I had an EF-S 15-85, EF 70-300L and occasionally used a Sigma 50 1.4. The first two covered everything I needed at the time and I'd thoroughly recommend them to anyone using a Canon crop. Now I'd probably add a WA too, most likely the 10-18 but maybe the 10-22.
