£100 to protect a 2k lens, worth it I'd say

Hmm, always have mixed views on filters just used for protection. Been taking photos for 40+ years and never damaged a front element or a filter. Only thing I think is a filter is easier to clean.

if you had read the pre-release blog /videos etc the claim is the front element of the sport is water/dust/ice/sand repellant .and while not wishing to put any of them to the test i have since new kept my lens hood fixed on ,and simply use a elasticated cover over the front of that .the build quality of the lens is akin to the build quality of a 1D series camera ,so i'll forego a extra bit of glass in front of it .

Last year I went over and with camera and 70-200 attached, filter got dented and a small scratch - I always use one and its the first thing that goes on the lens when i open it from the box

All my lenses have filters fitted, with the exception of the Sigma 150-600 - at £100-120 couldn't really justify the extra expense and the large hood is protection in itself

I thought I only had one on my 16-35 but there is one on my 70-300 too. In general though I think that the 70-300 & 100 have enough protection from the hood. My 50 hasn't and my 17 can't take one which is a shame as it's my most expensive lens and also the most likely to get damaged.

Some of mine do have filters but only because when I bought the lens a Hoya filter was a freebie.

Canon advice a use of a filter on the 16-35 f4 in order to weatherproof it. This is the only lens I know of that Canon have done this for

Just been looking round the web and this is indeed the case. So a filter may be of benefit here. Apparently the 17-40 also falls into this category.
