Sigma 100-300mm f4.5-6.7 EF fit lens

I have just taken delivery of a MINT Sigma 100-300mm DL lens at a very nominal price, more as a gift. I thought I'd keep this for the time being as I have sold my Canon 70-200mm lens as it did not have the reach I wanted- I was always going in for the Canon 55-250mm lens and 100D. I intend to keep this lens until I am in a position to get a Canon L lens to cover this range i.e the 70-300mm L lens.

I do not know whether any member has owned/used this Sigma lens and if so I would appreciate their views esp on IQ.

    Many thanks

    Nat

had a few of them over the years nat ,if i recall the quality varies from type to type which is usually signified by either no front ring colour base model ,or a red band around the top mid range ,or a gold band which is usually the digital version also signified by the DG marking i.e digital glass .

they are not renowned for there i.q though nat which reflects in the price .,that is unless your talking about the 100-300 f4 ,which will not work with newer camera bodies due to a out of date chip .ashley had one of the f4 models and i can remember him taking a photo from halkyn mountain of liverpool and we could clearly read the time on a church tower there ,25 miles away

is it possible for you to add a photo of the lens to ascertain which actual model it is ,that would help with advise .as i said earlier a lot of sigma lenses from the age of the changeover from film to digital contained a chip to make them work with digital ,some can be re-chipped others can't

best bet is mount it on camera if it works ,fine if it comes up with ERR99 then e/bay it

Thanks Jeff for your comments. This lens is the DL version and hence it is digital. It operates OK with my 6D but I still haven't had the opportunity to try out this lens due to the weather plus my other commitments locally. However, at the price it was offered, I was looking at a gift horse in the mouth and hard to refuse. I would however like to hear from any member who has used this lens and it's short comings.

        Sorry Nat can't really help.
I had the 100-300 f4 version which was superb so good that i upgraded to the 120-300f2.8 to replace it though that turned out to be rubbish so who can say?
Will still need very good light to get the best from it at f6.7.

          NAT NAT NAT ,
just looked up sigma lens abbreviations sorry but DL doesn't stand for digital it stands for DeLuxe which is the bottom end of there old ranges ,,
          DC is for APC-C sensors
          DG is for full frame

there are a host of more modern letters but lets keep it simple ,if you got this and for under or around £20 then its a bargain .don't expect miracles though ,i have had about three versions over the years on both canon and nikon of the DG/EX type there o.k but thats where it ends .

my advise is if it works without a ERR99 coming up ,then make a point of shooting in RAW so you can correct any errors it throws up.

Re: Sigma 100-300mm f4.5-6.7 EF fit lens

Thanks folks. I have an option to return the lens within 21 days, if I am not happy with it. It works OK with my 6D & the 100D. The odd thing is that the person who originally bought this lens never used it and it went to his son who did not want it. I got this via my church connections as I take so many pics in church. The price paid is what I spent on my recent, lost wager,on Stricktly come dancing!!!!
At best it is my intention to keep this as a stop gap until this expensive Christmas & new year period is over. Tne reviews I have read about this lens is that for the price, it is good value.

PS. You are correct Jeff in that DL stands for Deluxe and it comes with it's own lenshood

There are lots of favourable reviews of this DL lens on the Pentax site- of course Pentax fit! The only problem I have is that I like the L lenses and I would like to get the 70-300mm L lens next year- to replace my the departed 70-200mm f4 L lens. Hence I wouldn't keep something if I don't use it. Anyway let me see.
