Tamron SP 70-300mm f4-5.6 Di VC USD

I have the gut feeling that the VC aspect of this lens is not operating as it should. I find that some of my pics are Ok and some are a bit soft. I get far better pin sharp images with my 55-250mm + Kenko HD 1.4 than with this lens even without the Kenko TC. I have used lenses for a long time now and I have not encountered this sort of hit or miss IQ.

As I am well within the warranty period I have requested a straight swop for another new lens or for a full refund.

Thought I'd post this in case other members were considering buying the Tamron.

That's a shame Nat. Maybe you have a duffer.

I also presume I have got one of those duff copies. There are lots of positives about this lens which I like such as it is very well built;it has internal focussing so that the filter thread doesn't move;the telephoto bit does not "judder" like it's competitor the Canon lens of the same focal length; It has also got a decent write up in photozone as a better buy, marginally, over the canon IS USM. so I don't expect a problem with the replacement but I am only sorry that I cannot take it with me on hols this weekend- unless the seller sends me a replacement ASAP. Fingers crossed.

I had one Nat, albeit not for very long, before moving to an L series, but I thought it was a good lens for the price. Sharpness fell off a bit at the long end, but pretty damn good all the same.

It is an Amazon buy with a 5 year manufacturers guarantee offered to me via a Cathedral contact. So I have no qualms at all.

Hi Nat, thought I'd revisit some of my earlier images with the Tamron just to see what they were like. Now you do have a few years on me but I don't have the steadiest of hands due to an heredity condition.

This shot of a dipper was taken at 300mm f5.6 and 1/45 sec

Even used for butterflies, 300mm f8 1/500 sec

All these were with my 60D so sharpness shouldn't be an issue certainly when stopped down but I have used on my 5D3 when photographing otters at BWC 70mm f8 1/500 sec

Hope the replacement proves to be better than the one you have at the moment.

Nat, sorry to read of your lens problem. I wouldn't dream of passing an opinion of your shots, they all look good to me. I'm sure that you'll get it sorted.

This is the one lens I have been struggling with to get the IQ spot on. I have owned several other lenses in the past- All Canon, and I have never had any problems. The two L lens I have are simply brilliant in that I don't have to think but just set my normal settings and shoot and the image and IQ is spot on. I can only put it down to a bad copy. In addition I have been trying to use my TC on the Tamron at 300mm to get a reach of 672mm with the 100D but the images have been very poor. Not had this problem with my other Canon lenses.

And that nat is where the problem lies ,there is a definite marked I.q problem when using a t.c with low end zooms and even on my big monster lens it's use is limited to special usage only .although your getting the image it's NEVER going to be right with a t.c ,if you want mega reach without the weight you really should be looking at some of the new super zoom bridge cameras .if your going to try the canon 70-300 L with a t.c the same applies ,there's no quick fix I,m afraid

Thanks Jeff. The problem with a TC was never an issue with my Canon 70-200mm f4l lens and the Canon 300mm L lens. I have not discounted super zooms bridge cameras esp the Leica one at around £800. However, I am happy to go along with my DSLR for now. It is the shutter lag with the super zooms that puts me off. Anyway, who knows what comes along in the future.

Think Jeff is right using a TC is always a compromise to some extent. I've still got my Tamron and a Canon 1.4 TC. Not sure if it fits but if so I'll try it and check the results.

I don't fully agree with Jeff as I have the Canon 55-250mm lens which works brilliantly with the Kenko TC- like a marriage made in heaven. The Images are pin sharp and it autofocuses instantly. I am only considering the 70-300mm zoom as at 300mm with a 1.4 TC it gives me a reach of 672mm as opposed to 560mm at 250mm with the Canon zoom- a difference of approx 112mm and reduces the amount of cropping necessary.
