    Macro Lens 100mm

    Hi All

Looking at getting the 100mm Macro IS lens, looking for good macro and also portrait. Any comments/suggestions on a cheaper lens? Is the Non IS one as good?

    Thanks

It all depends on whether you use a tripod or not. The IS version is superb for hand held, allowing you to go 4 stops lower. The non IS is excellent on a tripod or in bright conditions.

I agree with Janet....and would add that if you use flash then it will freeze the shot eliminating the need for IS.

agree, when I'm using the 100mm its either got the ring flash mounted so IS isnt needed or on a tripod, so again no need for IS

Both are excellent lenses, I have the more expensive one and the IS can be quite usefull for me as I nearly always shoot handheld

If you don't have a ring flash, a Speedlight with diffuser is fine. If you don't have a Speedlight, the pop up flash would be OK with a diffuser over it as long as you are not right on top of it to cause a shadow. I use a free diffuser on the pop up..... Cut the handle off a plastic milk bottle so you have a tube, then cut a slit. The curve of it holds it on the flash quite tight!

                Re: Macro Lens 100mm

I have used both 100mm macro lenses (IS and non) and both work very well giving sharp results.
Though one of the few lenses i focus manually due to the limited DOF (focusing on the right areas is crucial when very close up)

I had the non IS version of the Sigma EX 105mm f/2.8 Macro for some years, and it was so good, I upgraded to the later IS version, because the IS is very useful when handheld macro shooting.

Most all professional reviews rate it as good as, or better, than the Canon 100mm F/2.8 L Macro. Its also cheaper.

agree I go live view, then enlarge right onto the spot I want in focus - often due to limited DoF I will take a few shots after different F-Stops to cover different Dof
