    Canon EF-S 18mm-135mm IS

I am considering replacing my Canon 18mm-55mm IS & EF 28mm-105mm USM lens with the EF-S 18mm-135mm IS to reduce the number of lenses I need to carry when I am out and about. I would like the members comments on this.

I also have the EF-S 55mm-250mm IS lens, the EF 75mm-300mm USM iii for my longer reach, the Canon 20mm lens and the Nifty fifty.

Since I have not received any advice on the above question, I presume that the members feel that I have no special advantage in getting the 18mm-135mm lens in place of the two other lenses I already have. Am I correct?

At first glance this looks like a good idea to me.

        Hi Nathaniel

My thoughts are don't buy it. You have alot of over lap on the focal lengths in your lenses. As you have two bodies, can I suggest you have the 18-55 on one and the 55-250 on another and sell the 28-105 and 75-300. Possibly even sell the 55-250 as well and get the 70-300 IS or 100-400 and have that on your second body. Which will give you 18 - 300/400 range. Alternatively, put on of the primes on in place of the 18 - 55. You are carrying less lenses and you have most bases covered, and are comprising less on image quality.

          Re: Canon EF-S 18mm-135mm IS

Thanks for the comments. Yes, I do use both my camera bodies and generally have one fitted with the 18mm-55mm lens and the other with either the 55mm-250mm or the 75mm-300mm depending on what I might expect when I going out.The latter gives me the extra reach of 300mm for reasonable wild life shots. The lens that is spare is my 28mm-105mm, but this seems to be a fair walk about lens. I try not to change my lenses too much due to the dust and dirt factors and hence I try to assess the situation before I select my lenses. Yes, I know I have a fair amount of overlap.

I use the primes for interiors and also for portrait, and where no flash is allowed- 50mm 1.8.

Or you can sell them all, and buy the 24-105mm L lens. And if have some more money, you also can buy the Canon 70-200mm f/4 L USM lens. Then you have two lenses to carry around with, with extremely good quality.

Nathaniel Sorry I read the questions as follows:
                Should I replace 2 budget lenses covering 18 -105mm
With 1 budget lens covering 18-135mm to reduce the number of lenses carried.

There was no mention of IQ , and the 18-135 is probably £350 do you want to increase your budget ?

                  Nathaniel,
You may recall I only use this Lens for all my needs based on achieving a relatively low weight & an ultra clean system!
The Lens is relatively new & the write-ups are very favorable despite its inherent zoom trade-offs that have been further minimised in this latest design.

Having given serious consideration to the original question, I have decided to wait a bit and buy the Canon 24mm-105mm f4L lens as this would fit in well with my 18-55mm IS & the 55mm-250mm IS lenses. This should also give me better IQ. thanks for all your comments

I've just sold my 18=55 and bought the 18-135 and I'm quite impressed with the images at all focal lengths.
One thing concerns me, there is a bit of play on the end (focus) section of the lens, it feels quite loose compared to my other lenses.
Does anyone know if this a characteristic of this lens or have I got a duff one?

                              Colin,
Mine is tighter than my previous Canon Zoom lenses but not as firm as a L-series Lens which has weather protection seals to enhance build integrity.
