    Sigma Wide Angle 10mm-20mm

    I am hoping to invest in a wide angle covering 10mm-20mm. I like the sigma considering that many forum members own one. However is it better for me to buy the f3.5mm or the 4mm-5.6mm lens. I am inclined to buy the f3.5 lens as the aperture is fixed throughout the zoom range.I have a 450d & a 550d. I like to photograph interiors of buildings such a churches and try my hand at landscapes as well. Any advice?

    Hello Nathaniel;

    I have the 'old' Siggy 10-20 and have been very happy with it, for what it does for me.

    If I'm honest, the IQ is not quite as good as the Canon 10-22, but then it's significantly cheaper...

    Reviews suggest that the 'old' lens generates better IQ than the new f/3.5 fixed... It's also c. £100 cheaper!

    I don't think that I have ever used the lens in poor light conditions; so the wider aperture has never been a problem for me; and, as always, you can ramp up the ISO to compensate if required. Certainly the 550D will cope handsomely with ISO400 without batting an eye-lid...

    Hope that helps...

      CF! Thank you for that. I am really surprised that the f4-5.6 siggy is better than the 3.5 fixed aperture. IQ is important to me. I like to take church interiors without flash,(using delayed exposure) after all the advice I have received via the forum. The pictures are better. Will think on this for a while, before I splash out.

        Nathaniel go for it,you wont be dissapointed I have the F4-5.6 only because the other was out of my buget.I have put 2 Sigmas against the Canon lenses and found in both cases the sigma was by far the better lens.
        So go buy it.

          I would suggest the Tokina 12-24/4. It easily beats out the Sigma in my opinion and has my vote for the best lens in its class even over Canon's much more pricier 10-22. Tokina 11-16/2.8 is another excellent choice but find the F/4 has a bit more image quality to it but you do get an extra stop so depends on what your needs are.

            I tested the two side (Canon vs Sigma) by side about the time the Sigma (the original) was released. Thought the Sigma better built ... IQ very similar IMHO. { And I did have ATP from SWMBO to get the Canon if I wanted.}

            But watch the persepctive / converging verticals etc at the wide end ... without keeping it perfectly horizontal you can introduce some 'dramatic' side effects ... you may want these or not.

            I tend to use mine for 'planes and things in sheds ... not outdoors.

              Wide aperture isn't so important on something this wide. Are you likely to need to go out to F3.5 anyway? My Canon 10-22 tends to be used between f8 and f16 so the concern I had about it's minimum aperture have proved to be completely unfounded.

              I know you have concerns about weight, and the Canon is around 1/3rd lighter than it's third party equivalents.

                  I have the sigma 10-20mm but Iam seriously considering selling it to get the Tokina 11-16 F2.8.
                  Was hoping the 11-16 would be a good creative low light option for small music venues and stuff like that.

                  I also have that Tamron 17-50 F2.8 it is a wicked little lens. I bought a 24-70 2.8L and I miss the flexibilty of the 17mm.
                  I only have 1.6 crop cameras. I am beginning to think the 24-70 2.8 was a mistake, except for the improved IQ and the lightning, fast silent focussing.

                  Nathaniel, I dont think the sigma 10-20 4-5.6 will leave you dissapointed.
