    300L + 1.4TC

Next year I'm going on a trip where due to flights weight may be a problem.

I'm soon going to be adding a 7D2 to my kit and in anticipation of the weight issue and not being able to take my Sigma I'm considering taking my 300L and 1.4TC. Which will still give me good reach for the wildlife I hope to photograph.

Guess this question is mainly aimed at Stan (though anyone else with experience would be useful) as you have this kit. Just wondering what you think of this combo in terms of AF and IQ?

Both Dee and I use the same combo and have done for the past 7 years or so and is still used regularly despite having the Sigma. We have taken thousands and thousands of shots and cant fault the quality and is also the combo that always comes on holiday with us ( as you say much too heavy to transport on a plane and also really too heavy to carry around all day in a hot climate), along with the 70-200 and there has never been much of a problem with reach

Many thanks for reply Stan. Not used 300 plus TC on my 60D so always wondered about this combo with crop sensor.

Ant, I used your combo when I went to Canada last and the results were very good. I also took the Canon 15-85mm lens at that time. I found the 300mm f4 plus canon TC gave excellent results but in the end I sold the lens and TC on account of the weight. As you are much younger than me, I am sure you will not find the weight is a problem. My current preferred combo for holiday travel is the 760D + 55-250mm + 10-18mm with the Kenko HD TC in the bag. I also take with me my Canon Powershot G15 which is always around my neck.
        Canon 6D; Canon 760D;Canon G15;Canon 40mm f2.8(Pancake);Canon 50mm f1.8(ii); Canon 17mm-40mm f4L;Canon EF-S 10-18mm f4.5-5.6 IS STM;Canon EF-S 55-250mm f4-5.6 STM lens;Canon 24mm-105mmf4L IS;Canon 70-300mm f4-f5.6 L IS USM;Kenko 1.4x HD TC;Canon 430EX ii flash;Giottos tripod;Manfretto monopod;Cokin P filters + bits and pieces!

Hi Nat, no problem carrying kit, have carried heavy kit quite long distances. It's more an issue with baggage on a plane. Trip I've planned is to shoot wildlife and recommendations are 500mm for full frame and 300mm for crop sensor.

Fly British Airways and you shouldn't have a problem. I've been to both Canada and USA with my kit and not had a problem . My kit includes 2x pro bodies, 500mm F4 Mkii, 24-70mm f2.8 and various other bits and pieces. The biggest fun you'll have is in security check in. You have to empty your camera kit into various trays!

            Cheers,

              Re: 300L + 1.4TC

You don't say where you are going but if long haul there shouldn't be a problem. When we went to Florida last year I had camera, 300 f4, 70-200 f2.8, 1.4x and 100 f2,8L IS all in my carry on and just the lighter wide angles in the hold. However most short haul are more restrictive in carry on weight so to get round that we wear a photographers waistcoat and 'wear' most of the lenses until we have checked in and then put them back in the carry on bag

Off to the States but there will be an internal flight so I'm guessing that's where issue might occur. As it's more than 330 days away can't book flights yet.
