I have a EOS 40d and am thinking about buying a wide angle lens. I can spend about £400 ish. Any suggestions on a good lens? I would appreciate some advice.

Re: Wide angle
How 'wide' do you want to go?
The 'wide-angle' choices for crop-sensor bodies tend to be;
- Canon 10-22 (Field of View 16-35)
- Sigma 10-20 (Field of View 16-32)
The Canon is marginally better than the Sigma optically; but is also more expensive at c. £500 v. £350...
If you opt for the Sigma; try & find an 'old' Mk I version; the optics are reputedly better on the MkI than the new MkII...

Re: Wide angle
I've the original Sigma 10-20 and its fine. When choosing I did compare against the Canon and thought the Sigma build quality better and whilst the Canon slightly better optically wide open … there wasn’t a lot in it. Mind you such a wide angle needs to be handled with care to avoid introducing distortions.
If you can stretch the budget … and if it fits the bill … then try the 17-40 f/4 L.

Re: Wide angle
See another thread I started ...EOS40D plus 17-40L plus Camera Armor. I've started to carry this combination when on the fells (in place / as well as my G10). I shoot mainly landscapes and sometimes stitch shots to form panoramas.
btw - I put the above DSLR combination in a Exped packsack which then goes in my daysack. I also use Leki Sierra Walking Poles which provides an emergency monopod.
