Re: New lens to go with my 7D

I'd have said the 24-105 was designed for the 5D2, as it's pretty perfect for it, IMHO, a fair long end and you rarely need to go wider than 24mm (and I use that quite a bit - I'll have to play with the statistics program from another thread). I have a question for Woolley - I see you have a 17-50 f2.8 and the 24-105 f4, if you're around walking somewhere (rather than at an event) what % of the time do you use each one? I ask as if I had a 7D I'd consider putting the Canon 17-55 f2.8 on it rather than the 24-105 f4 and you seemed an interesting test case.

That's a very good question. The 17-50 was originally intended as an upgrade to the kit lens, before I knew I was going to get serious over lenses. It's by far my least used lens, and if I'm out and about it tends to get left out of the bag to save weight since it's focal length is completely covered by my other three.

Where it comes into it's own is out and about in an evening - especially if there's decent street lighting, where I know I'm going to be doing interiors and don't need anything longer or if I want to gain shutter speed without increasing ISO too far. In other words, what was originally meant to be a general lens has become a specialist, and it's surprisingly good at it, too.

You're right about the 24-105 being designed for the 5D. It would probably be more accurate to say the 7D feels as if it's designed for the 24-105. They certainly work very well together.
