Following yesterdays thread, I tried out the extension tubes on my 300 f4 with the 1.4x converter attached. Like yesterday both these shots are uncropped full frame and the same flower.
First shot is the 300 f4 + 1.4x at its minimum focussing distance - 1.5m. The size in the frame is almost the same as when I used the 300 plus extension tube so from my point of view its better to use the converter rather than tube particularly in case other longer distance photo opportunities crop up when an extension tube would not help.
The second shot is 300f4 + 1.4x and 31mm extension tube. Firstly it was quite difficult to lock on focus, the lens hunting back and forth and when it did eventually focus I am not convinced it is as sharp as the previous shots with just the 300 +/- the tube
So my conclusion is using extension tubes on the bare lens is fine but add in a converter and focus slows right down and quality suffers
