A spanner in the works- Canon 15mm-85mm vs Canon 17mm-85mm

Is there much of a difference, apart from the price, between these two lenses; yes I know that one is 15mm.... & the other 17mm.... Why spend more on the 15mm.... lens?

Because they didn't want to buy a good L lens?

Doesn't seem to be much in it. For approaching double the price you get an extra stop of IS, an extra diaphragm blade (better bokeh?), a ring USM, a bigger object lens and a lot of extra weight. I presume the big difference must be in build/glass quality?

One thing is for sure the 17-85 has a better build quality than the 15-85.

Here is a review of the 15-85mm, from http://www.the-digital-picture.com/R...ns-Review.aspx

Nathaniel I too. Could not work out why the 15-85mm is so much more expensive than the 17-85mm, which is why I ended up buying the 17-40mm L lens!

The price of the 15-85mm lens is almost that of the 24-105 f4 L lens and I would opt for the latter rather than invest in the 15-85mm. thats of course my opinion.

I have the 15-85 and am very pleased with it all round. I do not have the 17-85 so I cannot make a direct comparison, but all the reviews I have seen rate the 15-85 well ahead of the 17-85. In fact the 17-85 is regularly panned for poor sharpness and barrel distortion at the short end and build quality in general.
              Cheers

I think the 15-85 is a great piece of glass (see elsewhere for all my comments) and I really didn't like my 17-85 all that much (only Canon EOS lens I've traded in to date). If you don't need the aperture (in which case get the 17-55 2.8) it's a great choice. Oh, and I'm still not convinced the 24-105 (which I also own one of and think it's excellent) is significantly better than the 15-85 or 17-55, but was a huge jump when I changed from a 17-85 to it.

If one was to get the 17mm-50mm lens I would recommend the Tamron lens which has an f2.8 throughout it's range costs around £250.

I don't see the logic in one spending approx £550 for the 15mm-85mm lens when the L series 24mm-105mm is about £650!!

Yes a good lens, budget around 300 from a good dealer.
I've lost the lens hood for mine last week- 15 quid for a new one LOL
Truth be told, I could probably do 70% of my all snapping with this little lens, I will probably always keep it.

It's easy to loose track of the prices, you'd possibly struggle to get a mint used 24-105 for £650 these days.

BTW I've learned (from this forum) that the older (but still sold) 17-50 Tamron is very impressive but the newer and more expensive one is not quite as good. (I'd take the Canon 17-55 over both of them, but for those on a limited budget the older Tamron looks like a real bargain.)

...and again I think the 15-85 is up there with the best Canon lenses on IQ (if not aperture), although I wouldn't buy one for a crop camera (17-55 for me, plus I have the 24-105 which I love, but couldn't recommend over the noticeably cheaper 15-85 which is probably a better lens at the wider end).

IIRC I paid £699 for my 24-105 at Jacobs in New Oxford Street, which was amazing as most of the cheaper people were charging around £825 and I'd decided to buy one pre- hearing the price. I actually checked with the salesman that he hadn't made a mistake as I didn't want him to get in trouble. Which is me saying I do think it's worth over £800, but less is even better!
