    More lens advice Please!!

Hi all, I'd like your thoughts on the 17mm - 40mm 'L' lens for my 7D, I have read somewhere that this lens was actually made for a full frame camera! could I use it on the 7D or should I buy the 10mm - 22mm?
My only other lens is the 70-200 f2.8 L. Any help would be helpfull.

The 17-40 works as a good 'kit' lens on a crop body. I find it works well on my 50D.

The 10-22 is a good lens but it is nothing but very wide. So unless you plan to do a lot of very wide angle the 17-40 is probably a better bet. If you haven't used a wide angle then you will find 24mm on a ff wide - 17 on a crop - that is why the ff owners find the 24-105 such a good walkabout lens.

To see the 17-40 on a crop body see the latest EOS magazine - Pages 50/51 for sample photos and quality assesment - you will spot that it is almost better on a crop than a ff. Dont forget to allow for the crop - so compare the 17mm on a crop against a 24mm on the 5D

I think the only alternative is the EF-S 15-85 which is a good lens with extra reach - but costs more

      Ian,

I have have Sigma 10-20mm and 24-105 L for my 7D. Check out my flickr and Redbubble as these are the lenses I use most. 10-20mm is very much for landscapes and indoor group shots. On the 7D the 17-40 won't be as wide, and as already said I think the 24-105 is (for me anyway) a better walk-about.

Anyway - I have a load of pics and if you want to ask anymore questions just shout :)

If you have the 70-200 then on a 7D I'd think the 17-55 is the best walk-about lens, followed by the 15-85. Some people (including me before these two came out) like the 24-105, but it doesn't go at all wide. One of the things that annoys me about using a full-frame camera is there is no equivalent of the 17-55 (f2.8 and sharp wide open, stabilised, 27-88 range).
