70-300 is L lens, which Extender?

    Have I got this right?

My Canon 70-300 F/4-5.6 is L Lens would not AF with either of the Canon Extenders fitted but may work on MF.

A Kenco Teleplus Pro 300 DGX 1.4 may work on AF depending on the light.

Would the Kenco x2 be worth considering?

The 70-300L does not work with the Canon Extenders. Physical damage may occur I gather.

It might work with third party teleconverters, such as the Kenko.

But you'd need to see results from using a 2x before parting with your hard earned.

It would only AF with the 1.4 if you have a 1Dx

They are the only cameras to AF at f8

Having purchased this Lens recently, I too asked the same question. A kind soul on another forum gave me this quote:

"Note that the Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 L IS USM Lens is not compatible with Canon's extenders. The Canon extenders do not physically fit into the back of the 70-300 L - there is not enough clearance for the extender to insert behind the rear element. This is the only Canon L zoom lens with a widest focal length of 70mm or longer that is not compatible with Canon extenders (as of review time). "

Here is the full review: Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 L IS USM Lens Review

Having blown all my pocket money this year it may be next year before I can get the Kenko 1.4x which I am told will AF to a point. I do not know about the 2x version.

Here is another review of the Lens (EF 70-300 f/4-5.6L IS) which is encouraging but more of a general assesment if you are interested. My experience of my Lens so far has been very pleasing.

Thanks jonesgi, will take a look at them,.

It really is a great lens, spent most of my money for this year on a used 40D after discovering that my 550D's fps limited wild bird action shots!
