I have just received the Canon 15mm-85mm lens and note that I do not audibly hear the IS working. Is there a fault? I just focussed on indoor subjects such as my wardrobe. With my previous IS lenses, esp the 55mm-250mm I could hear the IS audibly making a sound. I will be going away on holiday (Canada) this month and would like to know that my IS my lens is working properly!

Thanks Graydon. Worries over. Yes, I can hear it when I put my ear to the barrel.

Re: Canon 15mm-85mm f3.5-f5.6 lens
I have now tested this lens with various shots before I go on hols this week. I note that this lens is very sharp and produces excellent results. is is this the general opinion of members? Attach two silly photos to illustrate.

Re: Canon 15mm-85mm f3.5-f5.6 lens
Mine is almost silent too. I got it by accident - when I bought my 7D it was offered to me at a "rude not to" price. Damned glad I did too. An excellent lens. It's just a shame it doesn't fit the 1D MkIV though.Cheers

Re: Canon 15mm-85mm f3.5-f5.6 lens
The images from this lens (15-85mm) compares very favourably with my 24-105 f4 L lens. Have we then paid more for the 24-105 lens? Oggie you might like to invest in a crop camera body as well.Canon 6D; Canon 760D;Canon G15;Canon 40mm f2.8(Pancake);Canon 50mm f1.8(ii); Canon 17mm-40mm f4L;Canon EF-S 10-18mm f4.5-5.6 IS STM;Canon EF-S 55-250mm f4-5.6 STM lens;Canon 24mm-105mmf4L IS;Canon 70-300mm f4-f5.6 L IS USM;Kenko 1.4x HD TC;Canon 430EX ii flash;Giottos tripod;Manfretto monopod;Cokin P filters + bits and pieces!

Re: Canon 15mm-85mm f3.5-f5.6 lens
Brian ,Oggie already has the 7d which is a crop camera. I made a mistake in suggesting a crop camera!!!
Re the two lenses, I referred to the image quality and it appears that there is nothing much to choose between thense two lenses, albeit that the 24-105 is f4 through out.Canon 6D; Canon 760D;Canon G15;Canon 40mm f2.8(Pancake);Canon 50mm f1.8(ii); Canon 17mm-40mm f4L;Canon EF-S 10-18mm f4.5-5.6 IS STM;Canon EF-S 55-250mm f4-5.6 STM lens;Canon 24mm-105mmf4L IS;Canon 70-300mm f4-f5.6 L IS USM;Kenko 1.4x HD TC;Canon 430EX ii flash;Giottos tripod;Manfretto monopod;Cokin P filters + bits and pieces!

Re: Canon 15mm-85mm f3.5-f5.6 lens
Right now, the best reason I have for keeping the 7D is the 15-85. It will serve as a backup for the 1D with my other lenses and if I sell it, I am not sure I'd get the price of a 24-105.Cheers

Re: Canon 15mm-85mm f3.5-f5.6 lens
I have only been toying with which ONE of the two lenses (15-85 or 24-105) I would want to take with me on my long haul trip to keep my weight down- along with the other 3 lenses I am definitely taking with me. Most probably the decision will be made after I carry my bag for some time.Canon 6D; Canon 760D;Canon G15;Canon 40mm f2.8(Pancake);Canon 50mm f1.8(ii); Canon 17mm-40mm f4L;Canon EF-S 10-18mm f4.5-5.6 IS STM;Canon EF-S 55-250mm f4-5.6 STM lens;Canon 24mm-105mmf4L IS;Canon 70-300mm f4-f5.6 L IS USM;Kenko 1.4x HD TC;Canon 430EX ii flash;Giottos tripod;Manfretto monopod;Cokin P filters + bits and pieces!

Re: Canon 15mm-85mm f3.5-f5.6 lens
Mixed feelings..
on my 3rd 15-85. Now, to be honest , I wasn't too sure what I was doing when I got the first one, but expert friends assured me that it wasn't too good.
Now I'm on my 3rd example. As an amateur (strictly, this is NOT what I do for a living) my gut feeling is that it is great for medium/close-ups. I still have reservations about it on landscapes, which is a shame, as 15-85 is a great length. OTOH, it has surprised me on some landscape shots: more due to my lack of knowledge/experience than anything else, I think...
Perhaps this is a classic case of the equipment being better than than the (inexperienced) user.. It all depends on what you want to achieve...personally I'm lusting after a Zeiss lens, almost everything I've seen from a Zeiss is just 'wonderful' (Insert personal definition). I've used their glass in another life (long range shooting), and it is truly in another league.
But what do I know?
Derek
