Scanning old black & white images

    Hi guys

I have a load of old wartime black and white photos I need to scan.

I just wondered what would be the best scanner to do this with.

    Many thanks,

    Ian

Are they prints or negatives. I’ve just scanned some negatives (Approx. 5x4 inch film and glass plates) from about 100 years ago on an Epson 4990 flatbed scanner which has a built in transparency unit and has done an excellent job. I expect the newer models are even better. 35mm negatives i do on my Nikon 4000 neg scanner - takes forever if you have a lot!

        Thanks for the responses guys!

Here is a link to some of the images, they are mostly all prints. I do have a few negatives as well to scan.

I scanned these on a normal cheap 3in1 scanner. I need very high res images for a new book I'm writing.

        Kind regards, Ian

Here are some of the scanned negatives which were in varying condition. They were taken by my great uncle who must have been a teenager at the time and probably mixed his own chemicals. The gun, as far as I can make out on the gunner’s cap, is aboard the HMS Prince George and would have been taken just before or during the 1st World War.

I use the EPSON 4870,rx520,rx620. All very good. Ye Gad those Hawkers are good. The Mossy would improve greatly when digitised and brightened up. Being an erk myself I am very interested.

Here is a picture of my great grandparents that I scanned on an ordinary canon flatbed. Original is about 6x4 and from about 1912/3. Unfortunately the negative went missing a long time ago. My grandfather is the soldier in the middle who survived the whole of WW1 by being posted to the middle east, unlike most of his brothers and cousins who got sent to France
