JPG photo files tagged as PDF

Since some weeks all my .jpg photo files were suddenly tagged as .pdf. When I double-click on them expecting, by default, PS Elements to take over, I get an Acrobat Reader dialog box telling me "this not the right type of file" or something to that effect. In a web search, I found that lots of people have exactly the same problem and many believe that it has occurred due to some unfortunate software updates by either Adobe or Windows. None of them, as far as I read, however, propose a solution to the problem. Did anyone experience the same problem? Any suggested cures?

I'd look at the file associations, basically sets what application opens that type of file. Sometimes you can change this by right clicking on a file choose open with and select PS elements there should be a tick box for says always use this program for these files.

Thank you for your response Antoeknee. I thought of this, but if I tell Windows to open all such files with PSE it will try to do so also with normal pdf files. There must be a different approach, something to correct the glitch that, obviously, was introduced by an automatic software update; it is not by accident that, about the same time, many users have exactly the same problem!
