    DPP Query

    Folks,

I have been a user of Lightroom since it's initial inception and, although I enjoy using it and I feel comfortable with its interface, I am aware that it's RAW conversion facility is not up to DPP.

I also find that Lightroom is becoming VERY resource hungry compared to DPP which appears to run on steroids....

However, what prevents me from moving over to DPP permanently is being unable to attach tags etc to my pics to enable to find them quickly on my storage drive...

Or am I missing something completely.....????

    Dougie.

Yes Adobe products have always grabbed all the resources they can ... but you can control the memory it consumes using File / Preferences / Performance (in Windows).

By 'tags' I assume you mean EXIF Metadata. You can always get an EXIF editor that will do a batch en masse (but the last time I tried to find a free one it had restrictions) ... but not ideal. DPP doesn't let you do much apart from add a rating. So I adopt the following backup strategy (will not suit everyone) ... so NO editing of Metadata.

All images are read from CF/SD card to a network drive (the master copy)
This is synchronised with another network drive (master backup copy) ... not really paranoia
This is synchronised with a local copy

Then I create a Working Folder (for example C:\Photographs\EOS40D\Working\Baslow-11-2011 and copy the appropriate files into here) I also backup this up to a third network drive (okay slighly paranoid)

Then when images are processed they are stored in a Processed Folder (for example C:\Photographs\EOS40D\Processed\Baslow-11-2011) I also backup this the third network drive. The best of these get uploaded to Flickr.

As I have the Microsoft Codec loaded I can use Windows Explorer to search and view files.

      Appreciate the reply MX5....

I guess by problem is that I hate having to jump between programs to work on my images...this software is good for this, that software is good for that....my aging brain gets lost in the workflow, and thats where I think Lightroom scores somewhat...everything is at your fingertips.

I will have to look at the File / Preferences / Performance options you mention and see if I can quicken it up a bit.

      Dougie.

In DPP you can choose a programme to export into, (the option is at the bottom of the export dialogue box) I don't use Lightroom but it may be possible to select that as your export destination. If that works you can do all your basic raw edit in DPP and use lightroom to categorise and tag your images.

          Hello,
I talked about that with a Canon specialist in a DPP workshop and he told me, changing IPTC-Data (copyright, description etc) is still on an to do list in Tokyo.
Canon Professional Services all over the world collected the wishes of Canon users and there are still many things to do.
          Regards, Thomas
