End Of Year Challenge 2012 - Please state your interest :)

    All,

We seemed to enjoy the End Of Year Challenge 2011.

    Shall we do it again?

Would you like me to run it again?

    The Idea:
A great opportunity to share our best photos of the year, and because the theme and time span are so wide, the quality should be very high! I am certainly looking forward to seeing the best we have. For people who like a little bit of a challenge this may be a good way to finish the year. If you don’t like competitions you can just enjoy looking at the work; I know I do. Unlike our other competitions images will not be posted in the thread gradually; instead we will see all the pictures at once when the competition ends - a great way to start the New Year period.

    In brief:
Choose up to three of your best images, any theme or style. Ensure your images are a maximum of 800 pixels along its widest/longest edge, up to 800Kbytes in size and with the EXIF data intact. The images must have been taken by you using a Canon EOS camera between 1st January 2012 and 31st December 2012 and be in jpeg format. The images will be posted in a temporary album during January when people can submit anonymous votes for their favourites – Everyone can be a ‘judge’ – you’re voting for the best pictures in your opinion.

    Prize:
None, other than the right to use “Winner of the EOS-Magazine-Forum End of Year Showcase - 2012” in forum signature. But you don’t have to... It's just for fun.

    Rules:
    Entry:
    1. Photos must have been taken (dated in EXIF) between 1st January 2012 and 31st December 2012 inclusive and arrive in the organisers inbox (see email details below) before the midnight on the 31st December 2012.
    2. You must be the photographer who created the images and a registered user of the eos-magazine-forum in order to enter the challenge, and all entries must be visibly anonymous (No water marks or distinguishing features)
    3. You must ensure your images are a maximum of 800 pixels along its widest/longest edge, be in Jpeg format and the file size must not exceed 800Kbytes (the EXIF data must be intact so that this can be verified by the organiser)
    4. Entries should contain no watermarks, distinguishing effects or borders, and must have been taken using a Canon EOS camera.
    5. Images should be sent to the photo_63@hotmail.co.uk and you must indicate in the email (a) your real name, (b) your forum name and (c) a title for each of your photos. Please put “EOS Photos” in the email subject line. Any entries that are not clearly identifiable and verifiable won't be entered into the challenge.
    6. Entries submitted to previous challenges or to the forum for general C&C will be eligible providing all the other rules/conditions specified in these rules are met.
    7. You need to be registered on eos-magazine-forum to qualify for entry into the challenge. The organiser may also enter the challenge (the entries are anonymous and the organiser is trusted to record votes accurately).
    8. Up to three entries are permitted for this challenge. But if you want to withdraw an entry, or replace it, this is allowed providing it is done before the closing date for entry and you make it clear in an email to the challenge organiser what you want doing - so ensure the email contains clear instructions and (if required) your replacement picture.

    Voting:
    1. All registered members of the eos-magazine-forum may vote, including those who submit entries.
    2. Those who submit entries may NOT vote for their own photo.
    3. Voters should list their five choices in order of preference, by display number and title to avoid confusion.
    4. Points will be allotted as follows: Five points to first choice, four to second choice, three to third choice, two to fourth choice and one to fifth choice.
    5. This showcase is just for fun and by entering or voting you accept to abide by the rules and spirit of this competition, and acknowledge that the decision of the challenge organiser is final.
    6. Photos will be posted during January 2013 for registered users to vote upon.
    7. Votes will be accepted up to the midnight on the 11th January 2013.
    8. Results will be announced the following weekend
    9. The pictures will be removed from the temporary Album before the end of March 2013.

Remember it's just for fun - Good luck!

    Graydon

    Hi Graydon

My answer to almost all your questions is YES. Yes, we should do it again, yes, I'd love you to run it again (as you were so good at it last year), and yes, I did enjoy it (although I came nowhere!)

As mentioned in PM's with you last year, I don't agree with the 800K size limit. This is for 2 main reasons - people's 'expertise' in the software used to reduce the size differs, and, I feel if it's a showcase (as per the title), we reduce the spectacle if we reduce the quality.
I would remove the size limit, or at least make it more sensible. (although I'll be honest and say I don't know what a 'sensible' size is!).
800 pixels widest/longest edge is sensible, and I'd keep that as the only restriction.

I struggled last year with making my pictures come under the 800K lmit, and the quality of the shots I posted ended up being far inferior to that I would post on a normal thread!
(Obviously, this is the reason my wonderful shots came nowhere! LOL )

I'm not trying to be awkward here - and if most people agree under 800K is the way to go, so be it, no problem, after all it's the same for all entrants, but I just think the quality suffers too much for what we are trying to achieve, and doesn't do the pictures justice!

Many thanks for again offering to run this very worthwhile and enjoyable spectacle - you have my admiration for taking it on, and my appreciation for offering to do so again this year!

Well done! All the best, Mike.

I think that is a wonderful idea Graydon and your organisation last year could not be faulted.

Last year we had "any subject" and the winners were all wildlife images of some description.
This year can we have three different subjects/catagories? I'm not sure which three though, maybe wildlife, landscape and macro to name three.
Each member specialises in taking superb images in different fields. Someone who specialises in Wildlife may enter three images in that catagory or two in wildlife and one in landscape or even one in each. I think it would give more members a chance and encourage others to enter.
      Just a thought.

        Hi Mike/Stephen,

Size: I have no problem with the size limit. I did a pole last year and the result was to stick with 800k. It would be nice to see the images in the best possible light so will 1024 be okay?

Categories: Again, no problem with this and looking forward to the challenge of organising it. One winner in each category and one overall winner?

        Categories:
Landscape photography - Landscapes, seascapes and the urban landscape.
People and portraits - Portraits, travel and street photography.
Nature photography - Animals, flowers and other living things.
Sport and action photography - All sports and action.
Transport - Cars, bikes, ships, boats, planes, etc.
Macro photography - Close-ups of any subject.

        ### Black and White - does it need to be included as a separate genre? ###

        Black and white photography
Black and white photography techniques, any subject.

        Proposed amendments to rules:
        3. You must ensure your images are a maximum of 1024 pixels along its widest/longest edge, be in Jpeg format and the file size must not exceed 800Kbytes (the EXIF data must be intact so that this can be verified by the organiser)

        5. Images should be sent to the photo_63@hotmail.co.uk and you must indicate in the email (a) your real name, (b) your forum name and (c) a title for each of your photos and (d) which category you photo fits into. Please put “EOS Photos” in the email subject line. Any entries that are not clearly identifiable and verifiable won't be entered into the challenge.

        8. Up to three entries are permitted for this challenge, but only two can be in the same category. But if you want to withdraw an entry, or replace it, this is allowed providing it is done before the closing date for entry and you make it clear in an email to the challenge organiser what you want doing - so ensure the email contains clear instructions and (if required) your replacement picture.

        What do you think?

          Hi Graydon

          Sorry - that's not what I meant.

I'm happy with the 800 PIXELS, but I think the 800K SIZE LIMIT is too small!

I'd go for 800PIXELS on longest edge, and NO SIZE LIMIT.

My comments here are meant to promote comment from the other forum members before any decision is taken... it's only August, after all!

          Hope that clarifies things.

          Cheers, Mike

Okay Mike - sorry for the misunderstanding.

I'm not sure what size limitations are for the Forum but the pictures would only be on the site for the duration of the competition. It might throw Roberts capacity planning out a little way. The other consideration would be the emailing limit.

Let's see what the others think.

August already ... soon be Christmas.

Hi, Graydon. What a sucker for punishment you are! or hero. Yes, of course I'd love you to run the EOYS again; you've done a wonderful job on the comps you've run.

Where size is concerned I'm with Mike. While I don't pretend to be expert on the use of software I imagine what he's talking about is resolution. I have certainly felt that in reducing the file size I have lost quality (in so far as it was there in the first place). The picture dimensions don't worry me. Maybe if I understood better how to achieve high resolution while keeping image dimensions within limits the restriction wouldn't worry me.

Anyway, yes, please run the EOYS again.

                Hi Graydon,

If you are happy to run the competition then I am more than happy to try and enter and would work with whatever the end set of rules are. Thanks for offering to do this again.

Thanks guys. Can anyone recommend a file size limit? Not more than 2 Meg?

                    Hi Graydon

I think 1Mb is more than adequate.

I think this is a great idea, and thanks to Graydon for suggesting/volunteering. The categories idea is also good, but maybe still with an overall winner. Also agree with Stephen that 1Mb is more than adequate - even 500K should display well on a computer monitor.

                        Guys,

I loaded this a while ago. Can someone take a look and see if it works / can be improved. It would be good to have this in place - clear guidance on how to easily save your image - before we get to the start of the competition.

NOTE: This was put together with the old rules 800K and 800px max size.

                        Thanks in advance.

It's getting closer, and looking at the great images about this year, the showcase has the potential to be a cracker.

So many people emailed me last year frustrated that they were caught out and didn't get the time to submit their entries, or went away at Christmas. To remedy this I started this thread early and I am considering opening for entries early December.
