    Default 60163 at Ribblehead

Just in case anybody may have been expecting something with wings I went for 60163 in the thread title rather than Tornado .
My other thread in Transport LINK has the colour version.

Cracking shot, this is my favourite subject to be seen in mono, just seems to suit the era

Nicely composed but the conversion feels a bit flat.

probably as much a matter of taste as anything but I feel a little more depth of tone is needed...

In this instance I used Pixlr online. I created a duplicate layer and set it to Multiply then masked off the everything but the clouds and the exhaust steam, I also adjusted the curves of the duplicate layer to darken the shadow tones without affecting the lights and highlights. PS would do much the same using a duplicate layer or a nomination of levels and curves adjustment layers. In lightroom I guess one would use a suitable combination of adjustment brushes and/or gradient filters.

I finished it off with a blank layer set to Overlay and painted with black and white at about 5% opacity to burn and dodge in other bits. I burnt in a few bits of the sky that i felt could be darker, I also burnt in the hillsides a bit as well as the foreground trees and bright corner patch. I also did a bit of dodging on the engine itself and on the mid-ground to the right to get a bit more separation.
