Re: Challenge 112 - "WILD CARD".
Chris, gosh, I wasn't expecting that (I had John's Northern Lights as the clear winner). But thanks for setting the competition and your lovely words, and thank you everyone else who has been very kind.
The basic principle is as explained by Stan in his thread 'Cross Polarisation' and a couple of subsequent follow-ups in the Specialist Subjects > Digital Art forum. In my case I set the camera up on a tripod and posed in front of my computer screen (which was only just big enough to fit my face and glass in) and positioned my handheld LED light in various positions around me. Unfortunately, compared to the image I had in my mind's eye when I set it up, two things didn't come out as I'd hoped.
Firstly, I wanted my face to be in black silhouette with just rim lighting distinguishing me from the black behind, but I couldn't find a position where this occurred without the LED lighting interfering with that from the screen, and therefore either diluting the colour effect or lighting everything around me up. So I had to settle on just gentle front light, which also lit the glass, but perhaps because it was perpendicular to the camera I got away with it. Overall I took about 60 shots, with the light on each side, above, in front and below, and only 2 of those had any potential.
The other thing was that I really wanted the rainbow lighting to look like liquid in the glass. This either meant cleverly blocking out the light from the top half of the tilted glass (which was frankly beyond me) or blacking it out in post processing. I tried to do this, but wasn't happy with any of my results so gave up.
So, all of this meant that in my eyes the image was a bit of a failure, so it is lovely to hear all of your comments and coming back to look at it afresh now I rather like it too.
I have an idea for Challenge 113 and should be putting it up this weekend. So let's get a few more entries in, now that the Showcase is reaching its climax. Thanks again, all.
