Challenge 177: Food- from Field to Plate

Challenge No. 177- Food- from Field to Plate

For this challenge please show me any aspect of the food industry…… growing, being harvested, distributed, purchased and/or ending up on your plate

As ever, I am open to liberal interpretation of the theme !

For those new to this forum, and anyone shy of displaying their work, I particularly encourage you to enter. Hopefully in doing so you will challenge yourself and have a bit of fun at the same time.

Judging will be based on the following-
    * fulfilling the brief
    * a good photo based on composition, focus and consideration to the light.
    * Having impact. Will I remember your image after I go away from the computer?

I will do my best to give friendly and constructive comments and find a winner based on my criteria stated above, bearing in mind my strictly amateur status.

    The usual rules apply:
    • The competition subject shall be selected by the winner of the preceding competition who will also judge the competition.
    • One picture per person; images should conform to general image posting rules.
    • Please use a Canon EOS camera i.e. SLR / DSLR / M & R series
    • Posted images should be taken during the running period of the competition. Any images submitted that were taken before the competition started, or after the competition has ended, will be deemed invalid.
    • Images 800 pixels widest max (to help those with small monitors).
    • No Photoshop frames and borders.
    • Include a title; the image must convey the theme without title description.
    • Please, NO comments on images- on this or another thread- until the round is over.
    • No canvassing e.g. “I’m thinking of posting this image for the challenge, what do you think?”
    • I will pick 1st, 2nd and 3rd favourite images (please don’t PM me to discuss my choices).

Closing date for entries is midnight Sunday 3rd October ..... this should be enough time to get your thinking caps on, take your masterpiece and then finalise it in PP

I’d love to see lots of entries !

    Have fun, have a go

Bo. Lucky for you, my tomatoes never ripened, well one did but a slug devoured it. Had they done so I would not be posting this. Rather than waste them I made Green Tomato Chutney with them.
First time in my life I've entered a photography competition --- all I hope I don't have to organise the next one, only posting to make up numbers

          This is raw cider!

Here in the West Country, cider is regarded as food - indeed there are those who seem to exist on precious little else.

These are my Dabinette cider apples (a bitter sweet variety) which, when paired with my Backwell Red (a bitter sharp and a truly local apple), produce a marriage made in heaven.

I picked nearly a pound of blueberries off the bush this year, a good harvest, but this is The Last Blueberry!

                          "From Field to Plate"

This challenge seemed to have many of you scratching your heads, but those that entered came up with some interesting ideas well away from the church harvest festivals or tractors in fields, rolled bales etc that I had expected

“Here today, Scone tomorrow” – Rose. A lovely idea but wanted some more work on the composition There’s too much hogging the left side of the image with so much being OOF on the right, plus I think I’d have selected a Chief Scone with more scattered arrangement of currants

“Green Tomato Chutney” - Trev B. I know you have problems with static, silent subjects, Trev, so this was a good effort !! It would have been more pleasing if you could have draped the green tomatoes on or around the jars rather than an insert pic.

“Raw Cider” - John Liddle . As a student in Bristol I was very familiar with the finished product (!) and this is a lovely image, best seen on Flickr. I do struggle though when there is no obvious direction for my eye to go looking for a focus of my interest

“The Last Blueberry” – Farider The surface of the blueberry and the delicate stem are fascinating and would have warranted further exploration, closer in perhaps or moving round to get rid of the annoying lights in the bokeh

“Cake” – Stackman Nice composition, some lighting issues with the cake plate

“Catch, Cook, Clean and Eat” – Daisy M. I smile everytime I see this. I think it’s the layout on the grass and the solitary lettuce leaf but it rises to the challenge so well

“Jersey Boats”- AlexR! I know I said open interpretation but most of these boats look like pleasure boats rather than fishing boats … nevertheless it’s a super image with beautiful lighting

“Herd today, Beef tomorrow” EOSwinters Oh Nigel how could you, those big soft eyes ….?! This wanted some tidying up to remove the grass and barbed wire, plus you probably should kept in all of the ears. But your blacks are nicely controlled.

My winners’ rostrum looks like this

                          3rd Stackman “Cake”

                          2nd- Alex R! “Jersey Boats ”

1st -Daisy M “Catch, Cook, Clean and Eat”

Well done to all of you who entered , and it’s over to David’s place for tea now ….
