A Rare Look From Behind the Lens of a Professional Street Photographer

I spotted this over on Gizmodo and thought I'd share ... has anyone tried street photography? I'm not sure I'd feel comfortable doing it.

Great street photography takes a unique sensibility; such evocative snapshots often carry a kind of mystique with them. But professional camera wielder Markus Hartel made a video taking us right along for the ride, shooting on a rainy New York City evening.

Thanks for sharing, not my cup of tea, have seen some street photographers that produce great results, didn't like a single photo he took in this clip. Here's some more street photography for anyone interested, free ebooks, been posted before I know but they are quite good if you interested in this type of photography.

I have to agree, I wasn't that impressed with his pics either.

For my money, he's not shooting with the camera to his eye - hence the keeper rate is going to be low, and most of the pics would need cropping / rotating.
I must admit I liked a few of the shots.

Not wishing to be unkind, but "So What" comes to mind.

When I look at other photographer's work, I am looking for Wow, or technical excellence, or artistic, or unusual and generally a feeling of "I wish I had taken that". I don't consider any of my boxes were ticked during that session.

Does he actually make a living from doing that?

I've got to say I agree with all that's been said. I've not tried framed people street photography, only street scenes with people in. I did notice that most of the subjects didn't seem to be aware they had been photographed. One of two things could happen if it was noticed, one a good reaction or more likely bad.

Street photography is one of my favourite subjects. I have a print in my hall-way that I took around 1990, I think. Two young girls chatting in front of a fountain. Fountain no longer there! Ha! - Progress!

Collywobbles, from that perspective, do you like any of these pics ?

In a word, yes; In Southern France, with a compact camera- no problem at all. The problems arise if you brandish a large DSLR in someone's face ! Either you get a swift refusal, or the subject wants much wads of Euros ! I used a leica through out S. France and Spain, without any problems, but a colleague using a large Nikon gave up in despair.
