I'm a relative newbie with my 450d having had it for 18 months. Previously it shot well in bright sunlight on automatic; now it makes everything far too light. I'm not looking for advice really that says turn off the automatic - my wife will never switch to anything else - but trying to figure out why there is this sudden difference. I've been through the manual and can't find anything that would address this difference. Is my camera broken, or have I mangled a setting?

I'd check whether you've set some Exposure Compensation accidentally.
Sorry, don't know how to check that on that model of camera, but when you look through the eye piece and half press the shutter, check where the exposure meter is at!
Also might be worth checking whether you've changed to spot or other metering, although it should probably NOT be that... worth checking tho!

Hello Ian and welcome.
My first thoughts are the same as Mike's, you have set exposure compensation by accident. If you look at your camera's manual under "Exposure Compensation", you will find out how to set it and therefore do the reverse to unset.
