    Camera lense combinations

Hi; I own a 60D + various lense's one of which is a 24-105L. Obviously on the 60D the 24-105 is a 38-168 which means I'm forever changing between that, my 10-22mm and occasionally my 200mm 2.8. I'm debating buying a spare body to save time but then started thing whether I should go FF - a 6D - and also purchase a 70-300L. This combo would give me 24-105 - on the 6D & 112-480 on the 60D so basically 24-480 with 2 cameras. Am I right in my thinking, am I missing a point, has anyone got their own views?

    Thanks Andrew

    Re: Camera lense combinations

    Hi Andrew
A great camera and some great lenses.
Can I ask what are your main subjects in photography (Landscape, Wildlife, People, Macro etc..)?

If this was me starting out again then there are two routes that I would consider.
    1. Full-frame camera (6D or 5D3) with the 24-105mm f/4L IS and the 100-400mm f/4-5.6L IS lenses.
    2. Crop (APS-C) (60D, 7D, 700D) with a EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS and EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS lenses
Both combinations cover wide-angle to telephoto, add a 40mm or 50mm fast prime and maybe a macro lens.
The two lens set up means just one lens change if needed.

The 24-105mm f/4L IS lens and 200mm f/2.8L lens are very desirable lenses but are they the right lenses for you and the type of photography that you love taking?
A second body is great but they are soon out of date and replaced.
The EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS lens is superb on a crop camera but not so good on a FF camera.

    Just my view.

A second body should always be IMHO a FF such as the 6D Or 5D MK3. This then becomes the FIRST body.

True the second body would be my go to camera usually with 24-105 attached.

            Re: Camera lense combinations

I shoot mainly wildlife, so after the 550D, I went for the best 1.6 crop camera - a 7D.

Agree with Stephen on lens choices, as I pair my 7D to the 70-300 L, and also have the 15-85, and a 50mm f1.4. Spot on there, Stephen!

If you prefer full frame (say for portraits/landscapes), your 24-105 L will be a great walkabout, so pair it with either the Canon 10-22, or the Sigma 10-20 for super wide.

            Good luck! Mike.

              Re: Camera lense combinations

              Nathaniel,

I am fortunate to have all of the above, though I'm sure I'll have to sell something sooner or later (when the good Mrs Jones finds out!)

Anyway. 7D has not been out with me for a while but will be with me to maximise my 70-300L for sports and wild life.

I have yet to try my new 6D for sport and wildlife. I don't think the lack of a sophisticated auto-focus will make it a show-stopper, but perhaps make it a little more difficult. I think unless you know what you are doing with the 7D you could start to blame the camera - as we have seen many times. I think the main problem will be reach.

So my normal kit is 6D, EF24-105 for wide and general walk-about, EF100 for macro, and Sigma 12-24 DG for UWA. Oh and my 50mm

Remember your 10-20 Sigma and the 10-22mm canon are not FF, so won't fit the 6D, however I thought I saw you say you had a Sigma 15-30 DG and if so this will be compatible on FF. I have this too but it wasn't quite wide enough for me.

I am finding the 6D a dream to use and, though still learning, I think it is a superb bit of kit and I now prefer it - for what I do most of the time - to my 7D

              Hope this helps.

                Re: Camera lense combinations

You are definitely on the right track. One f/f body, one crop body gives you the greater span of usable lenses.

                  Re: Camera lense combinations

It's an interesting take on the usual "What lens..." debate!

I like your 6D for the wide end and 60D for the telephoto idea, it's cheaper, more convenient, and better quality than buying a series of quality glass.

But The 6D's high ISO performance lends itself to helping maintain a reasonable shutter speed with the slower telephoto lenses so it'll be somewhat wasted if you just use it as a wide-angle camera, and as Nat has said, it'll soon become your No.1 body.

I'd be inclined to use the 6D and crop-in for the telephoto shots.

Mmm food for thought. All your comments make good points and yes, I probably would use the 6D as the main body. I'll mull over your ideas and make a decision. Thanks for the advice
