Firstly, exactly what does this mean? I have assumed it means the brass type contacts both in the camera and on the lens.
Secondly, what should be used to clean contacts with? I just gave them a very quick rub with a clean hankie. I am thinking along the lines of nail varnish remover because it contains acetone.
Thirdly, I seem to remember that there is a list of error messages somewhere but where. I am using a Canon 650D. It is only three months old and has little use, due to the bad weather. Please forgive my manners, I forgot to ask please at the beginning.

If you really need a solvent - Forget Acetone - use Propan-2-ol (IPA) much safer.

But start with a pencil (or better the harder ink) eraser ... contacts positioned so gravity takes the debris away from the camera / lens.

Forget the error message list. Page 331 in the manual. Fancy putting it in there! Stupid boy.

Worth checking all your lens as if it is just the one lens then the problem lies with the lens itself - I had a similar problem with my 17-85 a couple of years ago and it cost over £100 to fix
