    Thinking of upgrading from a Canon EOS 50D to a 7D or a 5D

    Hello,

I am thinking of upgrading my canon eos 50d to either a 7D or a 5D.

I am not entirely sure which to upgrade to, nor am i sure what 5d to upgrade to either. I am a keen amateur photographer who wants to take things further and want to future proof my kit. I would like the added bonus of being able to use it for video as well.

    Also, I have five lenses : EF 50MM F/1.4 USM, EF 100MM F/2.8L MACRO IS USM, EF 24-105MM F/4.0L IS USM, EF 70-200MM F/2.8L IS II USM AND A EF-S 10-22MM F/3.5-4.5 USM.

Are both of my upgrade choices compatible with all of these lenses?

Also, I am not entirely at the level yet maybe to use these lenses as I still sometimes use the fully automatic mode on the camera dial (the green/blue oblong.) I think that these cameras do not have this option and will this cause me problems ?

    Thanks in advance.

There's a huge difference in cost between the 7D and 5D (so don't rule out the 6D).

Your EF-S will not work on the 5D. So the 5D route will (might) require an ultra wide or the ubiquitous 'Marmite' 17-40L.

The green rectangular is still there (albeit with an A inside the icon on the 5D3). It's called Scene Intelligent Auto.

I currently have, and use, both 50D and 5DMk2. As the previous poster has said, your EF-S lens won't work on any of the 5D range.
If you can afford it my vote would be for either a 5DMk3 or a 6D, and keep the 50D for a back up body, particularly if you are hoping to sell your work. The full frame images from the 5 or 6D will be more saleable, all other things being equal.

thats a good idea. Did not think of the back up body. This would save a lot of time and be very convenient also. I am swaying towards the 5d mk3 as i can get it for around £1950 from HDEWCAMERAS.CO.UK. I have used the site before for lenses and have had no problems and also the canon cash back has worked for me even though the company said it would not.

The 10-22 won't work on the 5D, but it's a very saleable lens, and you should get enough for it to get an equivalent FF alternative.

I love my 7D, but it's a) older and b) a little harder to use than the 5D III. If you can afford either, then I'd go for the 5.

Unless you need to shoot fast action like sports I'd also suggest looking at a 6D, which has cashback at the moment too...

Re: Thinking of upgrading from a Canon EOS 50D to a 7D or a 5D

I upgraded a year ago, from a 30D to the 7D, and it was a VERY worthwhile upgrade. I am delighted with it.

However, the 7D is still a 'crop sensor', and if I were to upgrade from the 7D, the 6D would be a very serious contender. That said, I have no intention of parting with the 7D for the foreseeable future.

As had been said, if you have EFS lenses, then these will not be of any use with the 6D or 5D.

If you like fast action 'shots', then the 7D is your camera, and it still reigns supreme in the 'crop sensor' group.

I guess at the 'end of the day' it all boils down to budget.

The 6D has the intelligent auto mode as well. I just had a look as I never use it.

I have both a 7D and a 5Diii. The 5Diii is a long way better for high ISO (low light) photography. It is probably better focussing. That said I still love the 7D. I don't do much ultra fast in terms of sports, but quite frankly you have to pretty specialist for that to make a hugh difference: the 5Diii is no slouch either! The other major difference is of course the FF v Crop factor - which is one of the reasons that I kept the 7D. The 7D is up for replacement probably in the next 12 months, but I wouldn't necessarily let that put you off. There is a pretty healthy price differential, so budget might just count as well...

Looking forward to hearing what you decide!

I have received an email from MPB re: Canon rumours of 7D II, new EOS M and possible Medium Format camera in the not too distant future.
If I knew how to do it I would put it up here but I'm sure if one of you clever ones has a look one could do that?

I'd be quite surprised by the first and last ones...
